  6. ACCREDITATION • Western Association of Colleges and Universities. • Approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

APPLICATION PROCESS • Application Fee: • $20-online application • Complete application • Personal statement • Two references (academic and professional) • Official college transcripts (from every college attended) • 2.5 minimum overall GPA • 2.25 minimum science GPA (As of Fall 2007, the science GPA will be a minimum of 2.5) • High school transcripts (only needed if you have less than 15 transferrable, college units)

Transcripts • We will need official transcripts from all the colleges that you have attended, including: • Any Community College attended • Any University/ 4-year college attended • Foreign transcripts from study-abroad program • Official Transcripts from all foreign study • Transcripts from Graduate or Professional degree • Transcripts from vocational program i.e. LVN,C.N.A, Phlebotomy, E.M.T • Transcripts for all courses completed by the deadline

We only accept online applications, however a PDF of the application is available. If you submit the application PDF, the application fee is $40.

  10. PREREQUISITE COURSES • College Chemistry (4 units), with lab • General Psychology • English 1A • Must attain a “C” or higher in all pre-requisites Prerequisites must be completed by the time you apply.

FOREIGN STUDENTS If you attended college outside the United States, we will need the following items: • Official, sealed, international transcripts • An official, detailed international evaluation of your foreign coursework The evaluation company that we recommend is Academic Credentials Evaluation Institute.   15. Applying For Financial Aid • Apply for financial aid at the same time you are applying for admission. • Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be processed into a Student Aid Report

THREE NURSING PROGRAMS DOHENY Associate Degree in Nursing – 2 to 3 years Classes in evening or afternoon, Clinicals on weekends Pre-requisite: College Chemistry, English 1A, & General Psychology Overall GPA of 2.5 or greater Science GPA of 2.25 or greater (As of Fall 2007, the science GPA will be a minimum of 2.5) Starts in Fall and Spring of each year Nursing Programs at the Mount

  27. Nursing Programs at the Mount • CHALON • Traditional BSN Day Program – 3-4 years Classes and Clinicals during daytime hours • 32 prerequisite units • Overall GPA of 2.7 or greater • Science GPA of 2.5 • RN-BSN program • Starts Fall of each year

  30. Evening and Weekend Program • Approved by CA Board of Registered Nursing • Targets adults who want to pursue a career in nursing • Classes are held weekdays, Monday – Thursdays • We now have option for afternoon classes • Hospital experiences are on weekends

  31. Community Nursing Experience • Exposure to elements of community health nursing • Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Gerontology • Need to schedule experience during working hours, Monday-Friday • Shelters, LA unified school district, COACH, Senior Day Care Centers, Literacy Reading Program

  32. Successful Completion of the Program • Receive A.A. Degree in Nursing • Eligible to take the NCLEX-RN (state board) Exam • Employment opportunities in hospitals and clinics. Additional education may be needed for community, home health, and public health areas.

BRN POLICY ON DENIAL OF LICENSURE • Denial of licensure for crimes or acts which are substantially related nursing qualifications, functions, or duties • Board considers most convictions involving sex crimes, drug crimes, and crimes of violence to be substantially related to nursing practice. • Examples: child abuse, sex offender, assault/battery, dangerous drugs or devices

Is the program a part-time program? • Program is full-time and rigorous. • Need to plan for finances, time, and support system prior to admission. • Carry 8 to 13 units per semester; a minimum of 6 units is needed to qualify for financial aid. • May need to “cut back” on hours of employment in order to be successful in the program

ADN Curriculum Plan • 2 ½ - 3 years to complete the total program • A total of 80 units are required: • 36 units general studies (GE) courses • 44 units of nursing courses • Transfer credits: may transfer 36 units of general studies courses • College Chemistry (4 units), General Psychology, and English 101 must be completed at the time of application.

  38. Is testing required for admission? • Math Test must be passed at 84% or better before starting nursing courses • Students take a remedial math course, if the score is below the required level, and retest. • May retest only once. • Proficiency tests for English and Math are administered before admission into the program. • Applicants for Advanced Option must complete the tests prior to starting nursing courses.

  39. Basic Option (3 years) Complete GE courses in Year 1 Start nursing courses in Year 2 May start nursing in the second semester if only few GE courses are needed. Advanced Option (2 years) Transfers in GE courses; RST 41 must be taken within the program Start with nursing courses Two options available

Class Hours • Classes are held Mon – Thur 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.; some classes are scheduled on Saturdays • Additional option- afternoon nursing classes from 12:30-4:30pm • Each course meets one evening per week. Science courses meet two evenings. • Clinical experiences are on Saturdays and Sundays, 6:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; some week day experiences for community experience. • Generally on campus 2-3 evenings/week

What is the schedule like? • Students attend two 16-week semesters and a 10-week summer session during the year. • Fall semester starts in late August and ends in December before Christmas. • Spring semester starts in January and ends in May. • Summer session starts in mid-May and ends in early August.

  42. What is the length of courses? • General Studies courses • 16 weeks in Fall and Spring • 10 weeks in the Summer • Nursing courses are offered in 8-week increments • There two 8-week sessions in the Fall and Spring • There is one 8-week session in the summer

  43. Which hospitals participate in clinical experience? Hospitals in LA area used: California Medical Center; Good Samaritan Hospital; St. Vincent’s Medical Center; LAC-USC Medical Center; Kaiser Hospitals – West LA and Sunset and Baldwin Park; St. John’s Hospital; Huntington Memorial; Torrance Memorial; Children’s Hospital, LA; UCLA-NPI; Kaiser Mental Health; Harbor-UCLA; VA-WLA; Torrance Memorial; San Pedro Pavillian

CLINICAL AGENCY RANDOM DRUG TESTING • Contract with a variety of agencies to provide clinical experience for students. • Abide by policies and procedures of facilities • Facilities have the authority to require random drug testing of students • Failure to comply will result in exclusion from clinical

  45. Can students choose a site? Students submit preferences for clinical rotation sites each semester. Choices are considered in assigning students. Carpooling is encouraged; students need a reliable car to get to the hospital.

  46. Which courses transfer? • May transfer in a maximum of 36 units of equivalent courses, with a grade of C or better. • Cannot transfer in credits once admitted into the program. • Courses, which were “in progress” at the time of admission, are transferable. Final transcript is needed. • Transfer credits are evaluated by transcript analyst in the Registrar’s Office.

  47. Science Requirements (12 units) College Level Chemistry is prerequisite to admission Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology must have a lab and be at least 3 units. • Combined Anatomy and Physiology course must be at least 6 units to receive credits for both courses. • Combined Anatomy and Physiology course with 5 units or less will receive credit for Anatomy.

  48. English Requirements (6 units) Eng 1A is a pre-requisite for admission English 1ASpeech 101 Eng 1, Eng 101 Speech 1 • Only Oral Communication or Public Speaking meets speech requirement • Eng 3, 103 may not be used

Psychology Requirement (6 units) Psy 1 Introduction to Psychology (3 units) is a pre-requisite for admission General Psychology: Psy 1; Psy 5; Psy 101 Psy 12 Child/Human Development (3 units) Dev. Psy: Must be Life-Span Psychology, covering Birth to Old-Age, e.g., Psy 41 Child Development that covers Birth to Adolescence will receive 2 units of credit and be required to take Adult Development (1 unit)

  50. Philosophy Requirement (3 units) Phil 10 Critical Thinking • We will only accept Critical Thinking to meet this requirement • Introduction to Philosophy or Ethics do not meet requirement
