  4. The Alliance System (1914) • Allies- France, Russia, GB, Italy • Central Powers- Germany, A-H, Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria

  5. American Neutrality • Pres. Woodrow Wilson • Immigrants sided w/ Central • Americans for Allies • Propaganda- info designed to influence opinion

  6. Submarine Warfare • Germans deployed U-boats • Sink any ship w/o warning • May 7, 1915- Lusitania enters war zone • G sunk, killed 1,200 • Wilson “too proud to fight” • Demands end to unrestricted sub warfare

  7. U.S. Declares War • Feb. 1, 1917- G resumes sub warfare • April 6, 1917- U.S. enters WWI • Selective service- lottery, age 21-30 • 2.8 mil Americans drafted

  8. The Home Front • Victory gardens- grow food, save for troops • Daylight savings time- manage energy • Raised income tax • War increased industrial/farm output

  9. Espionage • Spying to acquire gov’t info • U.S. dropped German classes, names • Lynching • Free speech limited
