  2. WHAT IS LATIN? • Latin is a language that originated in Latium, Italy, and spread quickly throughout Europe. • Considered a dead language because it isn’t spoken anymore. • It is still used to create new words. • Latin is the root of many other languages around the world.

  5. 1. DICT • From the Latin dictāre“to say repeatedly, order”, from dīcere “to say” • Rooted in the word “dictate”-to say or read (something) aloud for another person to transcribe or for a machine to record • Also means “command unconditionally” • Can be a prefix or a suffix

WORDS WITH DICT • Verdict-a judgment; decision • Dictator-a person exercising absolute power, especially a ruler who has absolute, unrestricted control in a government • Predict-to declare or tell in advance • Dictionary-a book with information on words • Dictate-to say or read (something) aloud for another person to transcribe or for a machine to record; to give commands

WORDS WITH RUPT • Erupt– to burst out or eject • Bankrupt– a person that lacks a certain quality or thing, often refers to having no money • Disrupt- to cause disorder, to break apart • Interrupt– to cause or make a break in the continued progress of (a course, process, condition, activity, etc.). • Rupture – the act of breaking or bursting; the state of being broken

  11. 4. PORT • From Latin portus ’’ harbour,  port’’ • A city, town, or other place  where ships load or unload • Has 7 different meanings in the dictionary • Can be used as a prefix or suffix

  12. WORDS WITH PORT • Export-to send or transmit (ideas, institutions, commodities etc.) toanother country. • Import- to bring in or transmit (ideas, institutions, commodities, etc.) from another country. • Portable-easily carried or conveyed by hand • Deport-to send or carry off

  13. WORDS WITH PORT • Transport- to carry, move, or convey from one place to another (Trans is Latin for “across, beyond, or through” • Porter-a person hired to carry bags and luggage, as at a railroad station or a hotel.

Why is it important? • Knowing words parts helps you become a better reader. • Knowing a word’s origin (where the word is from) helps you spell them correctly. • Knowing word parts helps you use context clues better. • The more words you know and understand, the more you understand when you read. • Study your spelling words!!!!!!!
