  1. Vertical tutoring:Our findings from The Weald School and Broadwater School.

  2. Our day at The Weald School • Sat in on Morning Tutor Period (20 mins) • Tour of the school • Presentation from the Deputy Head • Q and A session with students from all ages about VT • Met Heads of House and Directors of Learning • Had lunch! Saw lunchtime activities.

  3. What we noticed……. • Vertical Tutoring in action - some mixed TGps (clear seating plan to mix students), some sat in year groups. • All the students seemed a lot calmer than in TGps at RES. • Activities they did in the TGps. They had a weekly Quiz on a Wednesday and other fun activities e.g. board games, memory and word games. • At The Weald, each TGp puts on a “cultural event” every Wednesday lunchtime in the Main Hall. Good atmosphere.

  4. What we noticed………. • Younger students seemed very comfortable with older students. • According to the students, bullying had reduced since the introduction of VT. • Staff reported a nicer “feeling” around the school during breaks and lunchtimes. • The older students helped out the younger students in tutor activities like the weekly quizzes. • There was a “family” feel to the school.

  5. What we noticed at Broadwater • They had had VTGps for 6 years. Students we spoke to felt very relaxed in the company of mixed age groups. • When we asked them how they would feel about changing to a Year tutor system they were really unhappy! • Every TGp had a lead tutor and a co-tutor

  6. Parents views at The Weald The school had a lot of negative feelings towards VT in early days. “Putting other year group together will cause massive amounts of problems as well as bullying!” “How will you stop the younger students over hearing inappropriate conversations between older students?” BUT: There was some good comments from parents like: “I’ve looked into vertical tutoring and I believe it is a good step forward for the school.” And… “I would like to see my son getting on with other year groups as I think it will help him to socialise with people who are older and younger later on in life.”

  7. Students feelings after looking at VT “Afterseeing it work, I feel like the fuss was unnecessary.”Laura Keen, Y10 “My views have changed a lot after visiting The Weald School as vertical tutoring has worked for them.” Toni Phillips, Y9 “I still feel that I will miss all my friends, however I’m not so angry about it” Daniel Parkes, Y9 “After looking at the positives, I’m not as against it as I was.” Holly Anderson, Y9
