Paper Structure • Most papers include some or all of the following parts, though they are not always named in this way: • Title page • Abstract • (Table of Contents) • Introduction • Main sections (methods, materials, results, discussion, etc.) • (Conclusions) • (Summary) • Acknowledgements • References • (Figures and Tables) • (Appendices). The parts in parentheses aren’t always necessary. Research Methodology

  3. Title • The title of a paper should be • Attractive • Descriptive • Short • Consistent with the text • Easy to understand • Easy to retrieve from a database. Research Methodology

Abstract • Gives an overview of the contents of a paper, and should be understandable on its own. • Helps the reader to decide whether he needs to read the entire document by summarizing the following aspects of your research: • Topic What did you study? • Methodology How did you study it? • Results What did you find ? • Conclusions So what ? Research Methodology

Abstract (cont’d) • In general, an abstract should • Provide essential information (topic, methodology, results, conclusions) • Be self-contained (exclude references, figures, tables, footnotes, etc.) • Be understandable to non-specialists (define any unfamiliar terms, abbreviations, and symbols) • Include key terms Research Methodology

  6. Abstract (cont’d) • three broad categories: • Informative • Highlights the findings and results quantitatively. • Descriptive • Describes the contents of the paper in general. • Informative-descriptive • Gives both specific and general information. Research Methodology

  7. Informative abstract • State the problem or aim • Explain the approach • Give details of the main findings Research Methodology

  9. Descriptive abstract • Summarize the general background • Describe the contents of the paper (emphasize this part) • Summarize the findings very generally Research Methodology

  11. Informative-descriptive abstract • Describe the general background • State the problem or aim • Describe the approach • Summarize the findings Research Methodology
