  2. Road to War - 1939 • Japan attacks China - 1937 • The Fall of Nanking becomes a major issue against the Japanese during and after the war • Japan proves to be just as brutal as the Nazis after WWII was over

  3. Road to War - 1939 • Germany wanted to expand their boarders (Lebensraum) • German troops invaded the Rhineland (France) (1936) • Wanted to annex Austria into German control (1938) • Hitler demanded Czechoslovakia hand over the Sudetenland (1938) • Demanded the rest of Czechoslovakia (1939)

  4. Road to War - 1939 • Europe did not want to get into another war so quickly • British Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, believed that Hitler did not want to go to war • Chamberlain told the world that he had helped to create “Peace in our time.”

  5. Road to War - 1939 • While Germany was expanding/taking over, France & England threatened Hitler with war if he did not back off • WWI had drained France & England of military resources, and they were not able to back up what they were saying

  6. Road to War - 1939 • Hitler hated Communism & the Soviet Union • He realized that to expand German lands, he would need to keep the Soviet Union as a close ally

  8. Road to War - 1939 • Germany uses a new tactic called Blitzkrieg and new weapons • Blitzkrieg – “Lightning War”Overwhelming force • Noise makers on the bomberscause a “terror” sensation to those on the ground beingtargeted

  9. Road to War - 1939 • Germany turned West and headed towards France • They used Blitzkrieg tactics against France • German tanks played a major role as well at the troops

  10. Road to War - 1939 • In October, Nazi officials start to deport Jews from Czechoslovakia & Austria to Poland • BBC reports the concentration camps are being built

  11. WAR! - 1940 • Churchill gives his “blood, toil, tears & sweat” speech in Commons • May 1940, France is all but defeated, England stands alone against Hitler • Hitler forces France to surrender in same place the Treaty of Versailles was signed

  12. WAR! - 1940 • Radar technology is delivered to the United States • Radar has proven to be very useful fighting against the German bombing

  13. WAR! - 1940 • German Battleship Bismarck sinks in the North Atlantic • Bismarck is one of the largest battleships of her time.

  14. WAR! - 1941 • Germany invades the Soviet Union • Hitler has top officials come up with a “solution to the Jewish question” • United States put an oil embargo on all nations that show aggressive actions

  15. WAR! - 1941 • Russian winter is Hitler’s biggest challenge, and hurts the Nazi military more than the actual fighting • Germany wasn’t prepared for the cold winter • Temps reached -22o • German troops froze, vehicles stopped working & guns wouldn’t fire

  16. WAR! - 1941 • November Japanese navy leaves for Hawaii • 33 warships, including 6 aircraft carriers • December 7th 1941; Japan attacked United States Naval forces at Pearl Harbor • 2,404 military killed, 57 civilians killed

  17. WAR! - 1942 • United States plans to set up internment camps for Japanese-Americans, German-Americans & Italian-Americans • Of all those interned, 62% were American citizens

  18. WAR! - 1942 • Manhattan Project – the United States program to develop nuclear weapons – was viewed as a race against Nazi Germany • German engineers create the first man made object that reaches into space

  19. WAR! - 1942 • Battle of Guadalcanal – USS Juneau sinks killing the 5 Sullivan Brothers of Iowa • Their deaths caused the US government to create the sole survivor policy

  20. WAR! - 1943 • Operation Mincemeat • Allies fool German officers with fake information about an upcoming invasion • Italy surrenders in September

  21. WAR! - 1944 • D-Day • 155,000 Allied troops land in France

  22. WAR! - 1944 • Japan orders massive Banzai charge • Results in the death of 4,300 Japanese soldiers • Paris is liberated • Hitler ordered his troops to burn Paris to the ground • German soldiers disobey order

  25. WAR! - 1945 • Hitler is living in a bunker under Berlin with Eva Braun • Allies agree to let Soviet Union take Berlin • Germans don’t want Soviets to enter Berlin • Would rather surrender to Americans or British troops

  26. WAR! - 1945 • April 30th – Hitler kills himself • Next day, Germany’s new leader, Joseph Goebbels kills himself & family • WWII in Europe was over • Allies will divide up Germany into 4 parts

  27. WAR! - 1945 • August 6th – Little Boy is dropped on Hiroshima • 140,000 deaths right away • August 9th – Fat Man is dropped on Nagasaki • 39,000 deaths right away • Equals to 75 million sticks of dynamite • August 15th – VJ Day, WWII is officially over, sort of

  28. PEACE! - 1990 • Many people view WWII officially being over with the re-unification of Germany in 1990
