Strategies to Achieve Goal • Strategy 60: Provide a variety of online and 21st Century technology enhanced learning opportunities to increase student achievement. • Strategy 61: Provide extensive educational resources that support the implementation of the GPS • Strategy 62: Provide and implement a variety of 21st century technology enhanced learning opportunities to support professional learning for all educators. Build online professional development opportunities and support materials

  4. Georgia Virtual School Mission The mission of Georgia Virtual School is to develop and deliver standards-based, online resources to expand students' educational opportunities and 21st century skills.

  5. Since its inception in 2005, GAVS has accomplished the following: • Over the past 3 years, • Offered options and opportunities to 8000 students. • Offered summer school options to 1500 students. • Offered AP options to 2200 students. • Offered opportunities to students in Georgia’s state schools for the Deaf and Blind. • Provided opportunities for students who are hospital homebound. • Over 400 students have taken Latin through GAVS and, of those, 17 students have won awards on the National Latin Exam. .

Enrollment Trends • SY 05-06 - 3517 segments enrolled (2290 state funded) • SY 06-07 - 5957 segments enrolled (4033 state funded) • SY 07-08 – 7437 segments enrolled (6646 state funded) • High demand courses: • Latin • Japanese • Spanish • Algebra I • Personal Fitness • AP Psychology A segment equals ½ Carnegie unit of enrollment.

  7. We have added Clinch County and Gordon County GAVS serves 376 schools in 157 GA school districts.

  11. Who Can Enroll? • High School Level Courses • Public School Students – 1st Priority • Private & Home School Students • M.S. students may take H.S. courses – credit is up to local school. • Middle School Courses (Beginning Summer)

  12. Registration • Registration is paperless! • Students apply online – www.gavirtualschool.org • Local school approves or denies • Spring 2007 • Registration: • Currently Open (Also open for Summer, Fall and Spring 2009) • Sessions Dates: • #1 - Jan 7 – May 9 • #2 (Mini) – Mar 10 – May 9

Types of Enrollments • Tuition-based • Limited only by teacher capacity • $300 per ½ unit or $600 per unit • School will pay • State Allocated Funds (FTE) • Students may only take 1 unit of credit total per semester for FTE funding unless hospital homebound. • Only the state portion of the FTE is diverted.

  15. Local School Facilitators Make sure course is appropriate for student schedule. Approve the course. Act as school liaison between GAVS and students when necessary. Initiate withdrawals when appropriate. Retrieve grades for transcribing. Designate funding source.

  18. GAVS Credit Recovery Program Created by the Division of School and Leader Quality and GAVS – Spring 2007 Seventeen total courses in the program Funded for 10,000 enrollments in 2008

  19. GAVS Credit Recovery Program How does CR fit into education? • Students on track • Meets Georgia Student Achievement Pyramid of Interventions—Tier 2 • Preplanned interventions • Standard interventions protocols • Specific academic intervention for students who missing core academic skills

  20. GAVS Credit Recovery Program All courses meet Georgia Performance Standards. Teacher-less instruction, any time, any pace curriculum Expanded completion time-frame Any time registration No seat time requirement Free of charge to school districts

  21. GAVS Credit Recovery Program Can be used by all Georgia public high schools Students may only enroll in one Credit Recovery course at a time. No limit on the number of courses taken Registration integrated with the GAVS registration system – new credit recovery version is coming.

  22. GAVS Credit Recovery Program Credit recovery facilitators at each school can enroll students. Students must create and verify their GAVS account. Courses become available 24-48 hours after enrollment.

GAVS Credit Recovery Program • Each school must (GaDOE Policy): • Agree to use the course for credit recovery, not for first time credit. • Provide a local CR monitor or facilitator. • Agree to post a second grade on transcript. • Provide EOCT in appropriate courses. • Require the completion of post tests for each unit in the course.
