  1. WHAT DO ANTS EAT?

  2. SWEET  FOODS, LIQUIDS & FRUITS Most of the ants will eat sugary foods whenever they find it.  For some of the ant species sugar is the primary source of food. Generally, they eat natural sugar that comes in the form of nectar or other liquids. Another source of food for ants is honeydew, a liquid secretion from aphids and other plant eating creatures. Ants also eat oranges, mangoes and other sweet fruits.

  3. INSECTS AND  ANIMALS There are some kinds of ant species who are predatory by nature and feed on insects or other species of ants. Sometimes the ants eat some fallen larger animals such as fish or rodents. Army ants can actually kill larger animals as they have sharp jaws and live in groups. Queen ant can eat her own young ant and eggs if there is no other food source available for her to survive.

  4. SEEDS, GRAINS AND PLANTS Other ant species eat veggies like corn, plant material such as leaves and grasses. Apart from these, ants also eat seeds, grains, and plants that grow food on it. Mainly Harvester ants search for seeds of various plants and along with seeds they also search for grains, grasses, leaves and other materials from plants.

  5. FUNGUS Some ant species are very good in gardening. There is a species called leaf cutter ants. They can be confused with the other ant species who eat leaves. Leaf cutter ants do not eat leaves actually but use the leaves to produce lepiotaceae, a fungus which ants eat.

  6. HERDING Ants have the ability to herd their foods. Some ant species like Lasius Niger, Lasius Flavus have developed a relationship with aphids. The ants feed on the honeydew secretion from the aphids skin and keep the aphids protected from predators and parasites. Sometimes, the ants chew off the aphid wings and tranquilize it to have to keep a ready-made food source close to them.
