  2. Medicaid and Medicare are U.S. government-sponsored health programs designed for American citizens to help them cover their healthcare costs. Established in the year 1965, these two taxpayer- funded health insurance programs sound quite similar, which may confuse many people about how they both work and what coverage these programs offer. Let’s begin by understanding each of them, individually.

  3. What is Medicare? Medicare is a federal-run health insurance program for people aged 65 years or older, as well as for some younger people with specific conditions and disabilities like end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Individuals who have Medicare may also be eligible to obtain additional health insurance, such as via their employers or a private health insurance plan.

  4. What is Medicare? Part A: Covers inpatient hospital care, hospice care, nursing facility care, and home health care. Part B: Covers both preventive services and medically necessary services. Part C: Covers all the benefits covered under Part A and Part B. It is popularly known as Medicare Advantage plans in Texas and other US states and can be purchased from a private insurance company. Part D: Covers prescription drugs, both brand-name and generic medicines, based on a plan’s specific guidelines.

  5. When individuals attain 65 years of age, they have a special enrollment period with no late penalties. People below 65 years of age may qualify for Original Medicare if they have obtained Social Security disability benefits for at least two years, or have amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or ESRD. Also, people with ESRD become eligible for Medicare three months after a kidney transplant or when the course of regular dialysis starts. A person with ALS may become eligible for Medicare as soon as he/she starts receiving Social Security disability benefits.
