EDITOR’S NOTE Creativity in Business An Unending Strive for Entrepreneurs Nothing is as dynamic as a business. The continuous transformation happening in the business is either a sign of growth or a recipe for disaster. The difference between both is a carefully implemented plan and a distinctive approach towards business problems which permutes effective solutions. The key to keep up with the ever-changing environment of business is to quickly adapt to the changes it is presenting. The business world grows above and beyond anyone’s comprehension. People claim to have insights and share the same with the wantapreneurs, but in reality, it is very complex in terms of forecasting. Everything depends upon possibilities and the best way to keep up with those possibilities is to go with the flow. What disrupts this flow is innovation in business. A lot of entrepreneurs drive innovation in their business to make a difference in the market. Those who disrupt the market, manage to stay at the top of the food chain. In the competitive market, businesses tend to lose their way in preaching about their product or service and sometimes spreading wrong message through their brands gets the deal done (down the drain to be exact). What sets a business right is their mission, vision, and core values. If these are on-point and the business is
INDIA’S FASTEST GROWING START S doing everything it can to stay relevant with its principles, it can be said that this company/organization is contributing towards its sustainable growth. Now this is just a normal scenario where the business is meeting its targets and showing a branched growth. To do something extraordinary, innovation matters a lot. people in locating innovative solutions that create opportunities from problems. Amazing ideas, new concepts, and sometimes fresh outlook can change the business altogether for the better. People have observed that creativity promotes productivity. It helps in solving dynamic problems while giving a competitive edge over other businesses in the market. All in all, creativity has the potential to change the business world and those leverage its potential make it to the top of the corporate mountain. There are businesses that have been in the market for a long time but now have become stagnant despite their products or services are in demand. This sometimes is due to their ignorant approach towards market trends and inability to cater to the dynamic needs of their clientele. Entrepreneurs in this tech-driven age have the opportunity to create something unique for themselves as well as their customers. The only differential factor remains the application of creative approach and driving results from the same. Entrepreneurs who are successful in doing that, can transform the world we know taking us to a brighter tomorrow. Whereas a new entity coming in the market with no or less experience is spontaneously gaining a huge chunk of existing customer-base as well as acquiring new customers is leveraging innovative tools and techniques to enhance its outreach. This flux in the marketplace is created because of one’s refusal to adapt and another’s chance to grasp the opportunity. In this latest edition of CIO Look India - India’s Fastest Growing Startups, we came across few of the industry disruptors and pioneering leaders that are spearheading their ventures towards success in a creative way. The most important role in these dynamics is played by an element called creativity. Creativity in business has been a taboo for most of the organizations that believed in traditional practices and established processes. Trying something new was always observed as a risk with uncertain results waiting at the end of the tunnel. But there are some organizations that believed in creativity and took the bold decision of incorporating it in their workplace which evidently enhanced their business operations. There are stories of companies imbibing creativity in their work culture and experiencing operational output at unimaginable levels. Creativity has always been a muse to success and that is why entrepreneurs should take a closer look towards changing some things around them. Starting a business is never easy. If creativity is leveraged at the right time and in the right context, every business is capable of scaling or rather growing at a sustainable pace. depend on their job, we provide them a pla?orm where their ideas are nurtured and help them to be self-reliant, independent and to create jobs for the individuals who are freshers and dropouts as they s?ll need some experience to be a professional. It is not a good idea to involve technology to every aspect of your business right, le? and centre. We must start thinking to depend less on technology. Everything has changed from the advent of AI, robo?c, Block chain and so on. These are great tools to grow the business exponen?ally however being an entrepreneur our responsibility is to create more jobs and professionals. Being at a leadership posi?on of your company, what is your opinion on the impact of the current pandemic on the Indian business ecosystem? * We s?ll have large por?on of our popula?on which is unskilled and unemployed but because of the implementa?on of the technology at every aspect of business the unemployment rate has shot up. ® Hence, BeTheGuide has taken a step to reduce this gap and make large number of People ready for job and self-employed and involve more humans rather than technology in its business. We believe if employees are happy, the business will even have a stronger founda?on. The situa?on of our business ecosystem is currently haywire. However, it is the best ?me for the start-ups and entrepreneurs to expand their wings and solve the problem. I believe the impact on the start-ups are less cri?cal than compared to the established businesses, hence start-ups can re-adjust and re- adapt quickly to the situa?on, and invest on some project which will help the organiza?on to survive and progress through the Pandemic. What have you envisioned for your company to sustain its competency in the future? * On the other hand, for established businesses, it will be ?me consuming to quickly jump into some other businesses. Layoffs are happening at a faster pace and the business ecosystem is already in turmoil. However, it is the entrepreneurs and start-ups with fresh ideas that can fight and bring the business ecosystem back to its posi?on. The mo?o of our organiza?on is to Reskill, Reshape and Rebuild. This is self-explanatory and this mo?o will always help our business to sustain during any crisis. Not only that, we will also readapt, readjust, and keep on fine tuning our services whenever challenging situa?ons arise. Fine tuning of the services and Products are important at this stage as because closing the shu?ers of the business and laying off employees is never a solu?on for any business to thrive during this crisis. Of course, we may not get a quick result but many problems on the way will definitely be resolved. Hence the government must invest more on start-ups and provide more pla?orms to both technology and non-technology driven businesses. We will con?nue crea?ng more mo?va?onal clubs, offer more employment opportuni?es, create more professional trainers, and create more posi?ve minded people in the form of mo?va?onal coaches. Focussing on these aspects it will help every organiza?ons to hire the best professionals to improve their performances, innovate and drive business to its peak. We will create a mo?va?onal mall, mo?va?onal library, and a great mo?va?onal ecosystem not only for businesses but for the masses to think posi?ve at every moment and uproot the menaces of unethical human behaviour. As an experienced leader, according to you, how necessary is it to align one’s business with the latest technological developments? Frankly speaking it is not that necessary. During This Era of Technology, it is an added advantage to incorporate technology into your business where you feel human interven?on is limited and too much ?me consuming. BeTheGuide aspires to create a harmonious and happiest environment in the society and to make India the happiest living place on earth. ® 20 NOVEMBER 2020
5 The Top Startups Reasons Why Fail 1. MARKET DISILLUSIONMENT It is very important for inspiring entrepreneurs to focus on solving and actual, real-world problem which is a bother for many people. They must have a unique selling point for their idea – like if the idea makes thing faster, cheaper, or easier, or the idea is completely innovative One of the biggest problems of startups is that their product or service lacks one of the aforementioned selling points. Most companies believe their innovation to have a unique appeal and there is a huge demand for their products or solutions. I miscommunication, and the inability of your team to take the right steps are often attributed as the leading reasons why businesses and startups fail. n the startup world, the appropriate use of inspiration and experience often leads to success and wisdom. On the other hand, ill-informed decisions, To avoid this pitfall, it is crucial that startups create a product or service that solves an actual real-world problem, not something that has already been worked on by other individuals or companies. Also, startups can benefit from reliable market research to see whether their proposed product or service even has value to its intended inheritors or not. Daring to start a startup takes certain gravitas, determination, and initiative. But even then, success is not guaranteed. With more data and market insights being generated and new technologies emerging each and every day, being able to maintain that essential balance between change and perseverance is more difficult than ever. 2. BUSINESS MODEL FAILURE The business model is the spine of the startup. It is the logical through-line, which when done right can decide whether a business is going to work on not, at the offset. The model dictates the commercial and economic viability of your business to make money and value. Some companies are so preoccupied with the product that they tend to overlook the business model. The ongoing pandemic threw a wrench amid the cycles of many of the well-established businesses, forcing countless companies to shut down. Those who survived must outmanoeuvre this uncertainty by course-correcting, again and again as circumstances change. In hindsight, a cavalier narrow analysis would take this as a little more than a test for the business world. Using the information available to us, let us dissect the top 10 reasons why startups fail: Inefficient business model is characterised by high cost to acquire customer (CAC). 22 NOVEMBER 2020
Startup Dynamics A simple way to focus on what matters in your business model is to examine these two questions: In short, management must be the logical backbone of their company and own their own decisions. 5. TEAM DISHARMONY In a startup, maintaining team harmony is of paramount importance. A bad idea can be improvised and made into a good scalable idea with the efforts of a team. Even an unqualified and unprepared team can do wonders with persistence, and a bit of luck. • Is the method of acquiring customers rationally scalable? Is the cost of acquisition of these customers, significantly surpassed by the monetisation of said customer? • The CAC / LTV “rule”: CAC (Cost of acquiring a customer) <LTV(Lifetime value of a customer) But founders and team members are human too. Disagreements can arise and personal interests can clash. If the leadership does not step in to resolve and course correct, loss and harm of company culture is inevitable. Founder conflict, crucially, is the last thing any startup or its investors want to see. 3. INSUFFICIENT FUNDING In many cases, cashflow keeps the business alive. In some scenarios, passion, the number of users, or the validity of the idea are inconsequential. Invariably, employees need to be paid, bills need to be cleared, marketing agencies need to be paid, etc. You still need to pay dues to your employees, marketing agencies and clear your bills. To avoid such pitfalls: 1. Every team member should be driven by the idea they are part of something larger than themselves. • CEOs and leadership must keep themselves updated on employee needs and conflicts. Should disagreements arise, necessary steps must be taken to resolve them. • Toxic elements should not be allowed a place in the company. • In case of founder disputes, the founder agreement, the shareholder agreement should be in place in advance to deal with matters professionally. Bad accounting can cause entrepreneurs to take adequate measures on time. Businesses funded by private equity firms and other external investors, the founders need to be extremely aware of KPIs (key performance indicators) they need to show for next investment, and their burn rate. Failing to achieve KPIs, and performing inconsequentially through expenses, can surely push the business down the drain. To avoid this disaster, startups must: • Keep track of accounts and how long company can run, given current circumstances. • Startups must introduce an “emergency mode” - whenever the company is about to go under or run out of expenses, the team should work overtime, make sales, and secure the future of the company. • Always keep track of KPIs the investors will look for in the next round of funding. CONCLUSION The idea is what brings the team together, but it barely scratches the surface of what makes a startup successful. The industry is replete with stories of tech giants that started with bad ideas, but with some key alterations, a new perspective, and a lot of hard work, ultimately made it big. The team, the timing, and the idea are all essential elements that the startup cannot do without. But it is the persistence that can actually drive it to undiscovered heights. 4. BAD MANAGEMENT A bad management team is one of the most common contributors to a failed startup. Poor management can be exemplified by weak strategic decisions, communication gap between management and team, little or no work on product marketing, and having bad hiring systems. An undying, unrelenting, aggressive work ethic. Working harder than everyone, working smarter than everyone, and every single day staying later than everyone. And never giving up. And eventually, one day, you will have something that you are really proud of. To avoid such problems, the management team must be accountable of its action and decisions. They must also make decisions backed by empirical data and not biased experiences. They must ensure that the product or service is not bound for market disillusionment. - Aditya Umale 23 NOVEMBER 2020

Ankesh: We have a plethora of products, ranging from home décor to popular gi?s to jewellery, which is showcased here and available for sale online. The ancient and intricate Dhokra art (metal cas?ng which uses lost wax cas?ng) and Bamboo Cra?s owes its uniqueness to the style of work mostly seen in Bastar, Chha?sgarh. As an experienced leader, according to you, how necessary is it to align one’s business with the latest technological developments? Ankesh: Technology has become a cri?cal part of almost every department. As a result, businesses have high expecta?ons of their technology investment. New technologies reduce costs, increase security, enhance produc?vity, or improve workflows and communica?ons. Our unique website lets our customers choose a varied range of tribal handicra?s available from Chha?sgarh. But despite the important role IT strategy plays, it o?en ends up as an a?erthought. Bolted on to the business strategy, rather than forming an integral part of it. Being in a leadership posi?on of your company, what is your opinion on the impact of the current pandemic on the Indian business ecosystem? Ankesh: Lockdown brought restric?ons into the country, which caused a sharp dip in demand for essen?al and non-essen?al items. As a result, people have been out of work for the past months. Though the government has granted some respite by relaxing certain lockdown norms, it is s?ll unclear when and how the demand for products will see a rise. This is o?en because IT is seen as a separate en?ty where technology drives investments, instead of the business’ own aims and objec?ves. This divided approach, by both the business as a whole and by IT, is counterproduc?ve. And usually only serves to increase the disconnect between the two. However, we have seen a rise in demand during the fes?ve season but s?ll, it is a long road ahead. What have you envisioned for your company to sustain its competency in the future? The Export Promo?on Council for Handicra?s (EPCH) has cancelled the IHGF - Delhi Fair that was to be held in April this year. Similar fairs a?ract massive crowds of cra? lovers and traders from different parts of the country as well as other countries that help Indian ar?sans and exporters to earn handsome amounts of money. The cancella?on of these fairs can cost millions to this industry. The EPCH es?mates that the handicra? sector may lose around 8000-10000 crore rupees during this pandemic. This loss can have a devasta?ng effect on the life of the countless ar?sans in this country. Ankesh: Planning for the future is challenging, but providing foresight is one of the most important aspects of what senior execu?ves do for an organiza?on. We are ar?sans favouring and mastering the tradi?onal art forms (handicra?, handloom) which make the world a more colourful and vibrant place. Individuals, learners, and professionals make up our dev, design, and workflow teams. These teams can also be described as a collec?ve of lifelong learners who come together and crea?vely liberate one another. This pandemic is becoming a scourge for the cra? industry. Many handicra?-based enterprises may not survive this pandemic. Since most ar?sans depend on enterprises, this may mean that the survival of the ar?sans may become suspicious. 26 NOVEMBER 2020

As the founder and CEO, what is your opinion on the impact of the current pandemic on the IT industry and the related market? The pandemic will fade away and we will forget the year 2020 as the year passes-by. The pandemic has really helped all the founders/companies small or big to think differently and all have adopted to the scenario now. We believe we should not discount our people. Our PM on many instances has made it clear that our people are our biggest strength. Many businesses have come under extreme stress in the ongoing crisis due to pandemic. Especially startups who are bootstrapped or just started. At the same ?me, I feel this is an opportunity for businesses to relook at their business models, become leaner, more efficient and innovate. Bring Learning Alive I n a ?me where stepping out of our homes needs a second thought and academic pursuits being deemed non-essen?al, digital educa?on is now receiving its long-awaited recogni?on and demand. Below are the highlights of the interview: Brief our readers about Prac?cally and its journey so far. Prac?cally is a global immersive experiences company with a vision to reshape the way the world learns. Currently focused on K-12 STEM subjects, we use AI and visual effects combined with reality technologies like AR and VR to make learning more fun and effortless. INDIA’S FASTEST GROWING START S to convince a parent for online classes or to pay for an app-based learning model. Today that idea is commonplace and thanks to COVID, this upswing has caught on wings. In the last two years, we have pivoted into a consumer EdTech product company though most of our user acquisi?on s?ll happens from the school segment. We launched Prac?cally app in April this year and we already have more than 200k students on the pla?orm across India and Middle East. What makes Prac?cally a preferred choice compared to your compe?tors? As you can make out from the name itself, Prac?cally approaches educa?on from a very prac?cal perspec?ve. We are an immersive learning app focusing on delivering learning via experiences. Learning intertwined with immersive storytelling and real-life examples increases reten?on of concepts to more than 90% a?er two weeks of learning, if compared to the 20-30% using tradi?onal methods of teaching and learning. Charu Noheria Co-founder and COO Prac?cally delivers interac?ve experiences like simula?ons, augmented reality content and virtual reality progressive learning sets to make learning fun and s?cky. We are very pleased to see that our approach and philosophy towards limitless learning found a place in MHRD’s Na?onal Educa?on Policy (NEP) which emphasizes experien?al learning. This will be founda?onal for the next genera?on of learners to forge the future of India. 37 NOVEMBER 2020
Prac?cally is the only company which delivers thousands of experiences through a single app interface. In addi?on, we have everything else that a learner would need star?ng from live classes to doubt clearance assistance, test-prep and to top it all we are the only tech-first content company which doesn’t compete with the teacher in the classroom rather enables them to be more engaging and effec?ve. Being at a leadership posi?on of your company, what is your opinion on the impact of the current pandemic on the Indian business ecosystem? As an entrepreneur I can say, most products built in the future will be COVID-proof as this is one of the largest global impacts we have seen in recent ?mes. The pandemic has brought out the best and worst in businesses and put them to test. This learning would really help businesses think differently. Don’t Just Learn. Learn Practically. For the EdTech industry, the impact of COVID was posi?ve. The heightened focus and upward trend will con?nue as there is an innate need in educa?onal systems around the world to transform and COVID has just pushed us into thinking about it. Most prac?ces in our educa?on system are from the ?me of the industrial revolu?on where standardized educa?on was needed to standardize skill sets. Now the need of the hour is more personalized and agile learning, se?ng up the next genera?on of learners to navigate this century, bringing in constant change. Many businesses, especially in the so?ware space, are going permanent on the WFH model. And my thought is, ‘School from Home’ will always be an op?on now. What have you envisioned for your company to sustain its competency in the future? Einstein stated, “Learning is an experience and everything else is informa?on.” Prac?cally has already carved a unique space for itself in experien?al learning for 6 -12 graders. We as a team believe in constantly pushing the limits of technology to bring learning alive and help learners around the world enjoy learning. th th According to you, how necessary is it to align one’s business with the latest technological developments? We con?nue to invest in R&D to understand what modali?es of teaching learning techniques can improve the learning experience. We will use XR technologies more aggressively to create cu?ng edge, self-paced, and guided experiences. We will also be using technology to deliver some of the most sought-a?er academic services to our learners. It is extremely important to remain at the forefront of technological developments as technology becomes obsolete quickly. We are the only EdTech player in the industry which has a tech-first approach. Technology brings in enormous opportunity to scale, automate, personalize, and innovate. Sit on your current tech for six months and you will see a red-carpet exit for yourself. That is how fast-moving tech has become. 38 NOVEMBER 2020
Rimagined Making a Difference by Upcycling U extent possible for the public to use. It is not resource intensive when compared to recycling, but more of an enhancement where the material does not undergo any form changes. The process of upcycling makes the item be?er than the original, in terms of u?lity and looks. When it comes to industrial and commercial applica?on, upcycling is carried out through post-consumer or pre- consumer waste disposal or the amalgama?on of these two. We dream of a world without any waste pcycling is a concept that refers to transforming old and discarded waste material into something useful and consumable. It is all about maximizing the u?lity of materials by refurbishing them to the best Upcycling is essen?al as it reuses items discarded which causes less landfill and automa?cally spreads a posi?ve impact on the environment. There are various social and personal benefits also, a?ached with this process. It ensures minimum u?liza?on of resources and promotes cra?smanship. Upcycling facilitates business opportuni?es to talented ar?sans to showcase their cra? and earn prompt remunera?on for the same. One of the leading enterprises whose business model is leveraged by upcycling is Rimagined. The team of Rimagined along with their Founder and CEO, Shailaja Rangarajan are paving a way for a sustainable lifestyle with its unique upcycling methods. How Rimagined is doing that? Read it in the below given interview: Give us a brief overview of the company, its vision, and its journey since incep?on 40 NOVEMBER 2020
INDIA’S FASTEST GROWING START S Shailaja: Rimagined is an enterprise working on real world problems. We are a fully integrated Upcycling enterprise who are working towards making Upcycling mainstream and making it a world-wide movement. We wish to see a world where consump?on need not mean over exploita?on of virgin resources. In the last 5 years of opera?ons, we have transformed from a marketplace to a fully integrated enterprise with a sound produc?on backend. This has also given us an opportunity to create sustainable employment to our team members who lovingly and proudly hand create our Rimagined label of products. Please list the popular products/services/solu?ons that make your company standout from the compe??on. Shailaja: We have a wide range of product categories that are of High quality and aesthe?cs. Looking at our range, no one can realize that they are all from different types of material repurposed. We believe in making unique products. This has led us to create interes?ng Denim quilts, handloom Sarees and stoles from discarded co?on yarn. We work with the weavers directly and through an experimenta?ve and itera?ve process, create some interes?ng products. The other recent experiment has been with teak wood scrap. We now have an impressive furniture range created from wood scrap which otherwise would have ended up as firewood. Shailaja Rangarajan Founder and CEO Being at a leadership posi?on of your company, what is your opinion on the impact of the current pandemic on the Indian business ecosystem? 41 NOVEMBER 2020
Shailaja: The current pandemic has forced all the businesses to revisit their approach to produc?on, jobs created and growth plans. We have also seen that many small enterprises are struggling with unsold stock and we now see that Over Produc?on has come out as a big issue. Do we really need to produce more and price the products cheap? Companies have been adop?ng push marke?ng and crea?ng a false need amongst the consumers. This also has had very nega?ve environmental impact, to which we are rising slowly. We see ourselves as collabora?ve partners for various corporates, helping them in their Sustainability journey, either as produc?on partners or sourcing partners. We enable all this without compromising on our ethics of dignified work and growth of all team members. The other issue has been the loss of jobs for many which also has a deep connect to the migrant crowd. Should we not be looking at crea?ng more sustainable jobs in all pockets of the country and mi?gate urban migra?on? I strongly believe that people should gain employment opportuni?es in their places which also gives them a be?er quality of life rather than being forced to migrate. As an experienced leader, according to you, how necessary is it to align one’s business with the latest technological developments? Shailaja: Having worked in the IT industry for 15 years before making a switch to a completely different field, I believe that technology is always an enabler. We need to leverage technology to solve real world problems. I do see many people inves?ng in innova?ons which are novel and interes?ng. But my ques?on would be – what problem is it solving? Technology has now evolved to the extent that we are all now truly global. Organiza?ons should now look at leveraging technology to overcome barriers that might arise because of remote loca?ons, designs etc. We see that happening in healthcare, educa?on and this became truly the game changer during this pandemic. We have all experienced a world which we never thought would be even feasible. What have you envisioned for your company to sustain its competency in the future? Shailaja: Upcycling is a new concept and yet to evolve as an industry. That is what Rimagined aims to do. We will con?nue to grow as an Upcycling conglomerate and a global brand. The need of the hour is not to state the evident environmental problem. Instead, we will reach out to the customers with a credible and viable solu?on. 42 NOVEMBER 2020
