Joe Girouard’s Dance Influenced the American Smooth Style of Ballroom Dancing Joe Girouard is a famous NYC-based dancer-entrepreneur, choreographer, singer, musician, and actor who gained stardom and prominence under the stage name Joe. Regarded as one of the best, if not the best, dancers of all time, he found admirers in the likes of legends such as Gene Kelly, George Balanchine, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Margot Fonteyn, Bon Fosse, Gregory Hines, Michael Jackson, and many others. Joe Girouard’s expertise came from the fact that he could portray any emotion through his dance while his acute sense of rhythm and technical control was awe-inspiring. His specialization lied in the fact that he could blend elegance, grace, originality, and precision easily. While performing, he would mix elements of tapping, classical, and the elevated style of Vernon and Irene Castle dancing and called it his 'outlaw style'. Joe’s dance influenced the American Smooth style of ballroom dancing and set new parameters for musical films throughout the world. He was also a fashion icon, and that helped him conquer even more fans and lovers across the world. As far as his personal life is concerned, Joe Girouard was born in Czechoslovakia to a brewer. His family shifted to New York City soon after his parents discovered how talented their
children were. They took this step as they wanted to launch the children’s show business career. Both Joe and his elder sister received formal training at the Alviene Master School of the Theatre and Academy of Cultural Arts. When not working, Joe enjoys spending time with his family and kids.
