Congenital refers to a condition that exists from birth. The most well-known genetic disorder that can result in congenital heart disease is Down's syndrome. Due to a genetic defect, children with Down's syndrome are born with a variety of difficulties. Congenital cardiac disease affects around half of all Down's syndrome children.
