  1. Are “Graha” And “Planet” the Same Thing? Let’s Find Out

  2. Astrology, in its largest context, is the search for human meaning in the sky, and humans from civilizations all across the globe have been looking for this meaning for millennia. This quest for meaning has given rise to many astrological systems such as Vedic astrology, Babylonian astrology, and Egyptian astrology. Though each of these systems has its own foibles, one thing that almost all of them have in common is that they all acknowledge the influence of planets on humans. Planets in Astrology The distinction between astrology and astronomy is one that frequently perplexes some of us. So, before delving into the astrological concept of Planets, we’d want to clarify this distinction to our readers.

  3. Astronomy, in layman’s terms, is the study of the cosmos and its contents outside of Earth’s atmosphere. Astronomers study celestial objects’ locations, movements, and characteristics. Astrology studies how such locations, movements, and characteristics impact individuals and events on Earth. Let us now discuss Planets. Planets in astrology have a connotation that differs from what a planet is in astronomy. Planet astrology in the Vedic culture The Sanskrit equivalent of the word Planet in Vedic Astrology is “Graha.” However, if we examine their respective meanings, we may see that the word “planet” does not cover the entire meaning of the Sanskrit word “Graha.” In Sanskrit, Graha implies “the one who moves,” or “the one who has the capacity to grip, lay hold on, or grasp.”

  4. What is Graha? The “Graha” of Vedic astrology is sometimes thought to be analogous to the planets of astronomy. Their meanings, however, are vastly different. Let us examine this distinction. The term “planet” refers to a large object that rotates around the sun. “Graha” is a name used to describe sky bodies that move in the sky. There is another meaning of Graha that we discussed before. However, if we look at the other meaning of Graha, we will see that the other meaning is the source of the primary meaning of Graha, which is “The one who moves.” Let’s understand this in detail.

  5. Why NavaGrahas are also called Nine Seizers? A deeper understanding of the word Graha may appropriately answer this question. “Graha” means anything that takes over any other thing. Right? The stars in the sky are static; they never move or lag behind other stars. These Nava Grahas (meaning Nine Grahas) are not static; they move in the sky. So, when you look at the sky, sometimes the moon is ahead of Jupiter, sometimes Venus is behind Mars, and sometimes Jupiter is ahead of everything. As a result, as seen from Earth in the sky, these 9 heavenly bodies appear to take up the others and sometimes lag behind. This is why the meaning of Graha in Vedic planet astrology is also understood as “the one who has the ability to grip, lay hold on, or grasp”

  6. Anyone with a rudimentary understanding of the names of all the Nava Grahas would instantly object, saying “If this is the case, why is the Sun named Graha since it doesn’t move?” Of course, the Sun does not move in relation to the solar system, but when you see the Sun in relation to Earth on the sky star map, the Sun’s location on the sky star map moves. The star map is fixed, and only the nine objects visible from Earth change on the sky map.
