Blue Sapphire Rituals of Wearing and Benefits The planet Saturn (referred to as shani) is one of the most revered (and feared!) houses as per Vedic astrology. People take a lot of efforts to propitiate this planet and ensure that it does not play havoc with their plans and desires. The science of vedic astrology recommends several stones for each of the grahas (houses or planets). For Saturn / Shani, the recommended precious gemstone is the blue sapphire Sapphire is formed from the “mineral corundum”, which broadly has the chemical formula of alumina. The blue sapphire gemstone has a hardness close to diamond, hence is very durable, and because of its blue color, it looks very attractive. Blue sapphires are mined in several countries like Australia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and USA, among others. The main use of blue sapphire is to ward off the ill effects of shani. It is also referred to as the neelam. A person who adorns the neelam would feel the positive effects almost immediately. It is said to provide protection from jealous enemies and clear the mind of the wearer from all confusion. Physically, it removes lethargy and improves the digestive abilities of the wearer.
But the thing to be kept in mind while choosing the blue sapphire (neelam) gemstone is that there are certain rituals that need to be followed for best results. The first thing to remember is that the blue sapphire might not work equally well for everyone. That is why it is important that you first test it for efficacy in solving your problems. So a testing period of 3 days or so is recommended. If you wear it for three days and get good dreams, then it is good for you and you can take it. Check with a trusted astrologer for the right day and time for buying a blue sapphire. It is usually recommended that you buy it on a Saturday during Shukla paksha. The ring on which your blue sapphire would be mounted should ideally be made of panchadhatu (an alloy made of 5 metals in the following proportion – 1 part gold, 1 part copper, 2 parts silver, 3 parts lead and 4 parts iron). The gemstone should be mounted in such a way that it comes into contact with your skin when you wear the ring. The gemstone itself should be at least 3 carats and up to 6 carats. Forwarding off the ill effects of shani, the most recommended blue sapphire is the transparent one from Sri Lanka. Ideally, the ring should be worn on the middle finger of your right hand. On the day when you first wear the ring of blue sapphire gemstone, you must first dip the ring one by one in pure water (gangajal), milk and honey. The best time for this is about two hours before sunset on any given Saturday. Once the ring has been thoroughly washed as described above, you need to place it on a black piece of cloth and you must also sit on a black cloth facing West.
You must chant the following mantra 108 times: Aum Sham Shanaishcharaye Namah Aum/Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya. Once this is done, you are ready to wear your blue sapphire neelam ring. As we said before, if the blue sapphire is suitable for you, it will start giving you positive results within the first 60 days of wearing it. If worn with due devotion and immense faith, your blue sapphire ring will take away all that is troublesome and negative in your life. The positive effects would stay for around 4 years, after which the effects of the blue sapphire ring will begin to wane.
