5 SMALL DOG BREEDS AND HOW TO GROOM THEM If you are looking to own a Pet and wondering which type of dog to keep, then let us tell you more about the small sized Dogs. Here is a list of 5 small Dog breeds and how to Groom them.
1. PUG • The Pug is one of the most popular breeds of small dogs who are recognized by their unique features of a wrinkly face and a curly tail. They come from an ancient breed of dogs, who originated in China and were later brought into Europe in the 16th century. As compared to their ancient counterparts, modern pugs have a square and compact body along with a deep chest and well-developed muscles. They are the perfect dog to keep if you live in an apartment or a small dwelling as they can manage well even without a yard. However, they are sensitive to extremely hot or cold weather and should ideally be kept indoors at a comfortable temperature. • Pugs have short and shiny coats that are easy to groom. You just need to brush them once in a while with a firm brush to remove dead hair. You can check out our range of brushes here. They don’t need to be bathed regularly unless they get very dirty, but once you bathe them then you have to dry them immediately as they are very sensitive to temperature. You have to clean their facial wrinkles regularly to avoid skin infections. Do note that pugs tend to shed heavily about twice a year.
2. POCKET BEAGLE • The Pocket Beagle is a miniature version of the Beagle dog breed and is a part of the hound group of dogs. They have a calm and pleading look along with large dark brown or hazel eyes which many find difficult to resist. The beagle is a fun-loving and playful dog which makes them a favourite, especially among children. Although beagles can be kept in small dwellings or apartments, they do need some kind of activity. If you keep a beagle then make sure that you take it for a walk daily. • Pocket Beagles shed moderately and require minimal Pet grooming. You only need to brush its coat occasionally with a firm bristle brush and bathe them once in a while. Use our recommended brush, the Dog Double Sided Brush, Pin + Bristles.
3. BOSTON TERRIER • The Boston Terrier is an American origin dog who was acknowledged by the American Kennel Club in 1893 as a non-sporting breed. It’s coat bears resemblance to a tuxedo which has earned it the nickname of ‘American Gentleman’. Boston Terriers are lively dogs who require daily exercise. They love to interact with their owners and play games. However, they are intolerant to heat and anesthesia. • Boston Terriers don’t need to be groomed that often, just an occasional brushing of the coat to remove dead hairs is enough. However, since they have big eyes, their faces need to be washed regularly and their eyes need to be checked for any redness or irritation.
4. CHIHUAHUA • The Chihuahua is recognized as the smallest of all dog breeds and was named after the state of Chihuahua in Mexico. They tend to be very loyal to their owners. Chihuahuas prefer warmer weather and therefore like to be indoors most of the time. However, they do need some exercise so you can take them for a short leash walk. • They come in various fur colours and coat thicknesses. Chihuahuas with smooth coats need to be brushed ever so often while those with longer coats need to be brushed at least two to three times a week.
5. MANCHESTER TERRIER • The Manchester Terrier belongs to the smooth-haired terrier dog breed. It got its name from the popular English city of Manchester, in the 19th century where it was renowned for its rat killing skills. This dog is athletic, independent and impeccably clean. It makes a great apartment pet and gets along well with families and children. • Manchester Terriers don’t need much maintenance as you need to brush the coat only once a week with a rubber or bristle brush to prevent matting and to get rid of any dead hair. Although they don’t shed much, routine brushing is what keeps their shedding in control. Use our Standard Self-Cleaning Slicker Brush. Your Manchester terrier doesn’t need a regular bath unless they get very dirty. However, make sure that you use a good shampoo for dogs to avoid drying of the skin and coat. Small sized dogs are not only cute and cuddly but are also easier to take care of, as compared to big dogs.
