  3. Morphine: History of Abuse  The once known as the magical drug and plant of joy goes way back to Byzantine times. Alchemists of then had opium-based elixir but the defeat of the Ottoman made them lose the basic formula of the drug. From time to time other opium-based medications were introduced like laudanum by Paracelsus around 1522 and the new opiate in the late eighteenth century by East India Company.  Soon in 1804 Friedrich Sertürner, Germany based pharmacist discovered Morphine and named it after the Greek god of dreams, Morpheus. Morphine is considered as the very first alkaloid obtained from plant poppy. Actively marketed as the pain medication in 1817 to the general public it helped a lot of doctors to complete surgeries more efficiently and sedate patients. It was not just used as anaesthesia but also to counter the alcohol addiction. Later in times, various incidents revealed the killing nature of the drug. In particular, Friedrich Sertürnerown wife died of the overdose of the drug. Devastated, he tried to warn others but in vain.

  4. Morphine: History of Abuse  After the outbreak of American Civil War in 1861 the drug was taken as the blessing from the god, treating the war-wounded soldiers. Hence, due to its pain healing characteristics the medical society named it God?s Own Medicine (GOM). But eventually, the extensive use of morphine proved the addictive nature of the drug. In fact, the drug was alleged to make 400,000 soldiers morphine addicts and the disease was known as the ?soldier?s disease.? The war veterans became junkies of the society and the blessings became drug epidemic. As there were no drugs laws, the morphine was easily accessible to anyone.  Later in 1874, the deadly medicine was synthesized, for the medical purposes, to heroin medically called Diacetylmorphine. Heroin is 1.5 to 2 more effective than morphine. Whereas, in 1914, Harrison Narcotics Tax Act imposed a restriction on morphine possession making it controlled substance in the US and without prescription possession illegal. Morphine was the most famous among drug addicts until heroin was synthesized. Now today Canada is the world?s second-largest consumer of the prescription opioids after America hence indicating an immediate counter response on both individual and state level.

  5. Morphine Addiction: How it is misused  The decay of morphine in the body depends on many factors and importantly on how the abuser has administered the drug. Generally, morphine lasts for 6 to 7 hours and minimum up to an hour. Morphine, if taken in the form of injection, lasts for more than an hour with a peak of 20 minutes. Whereas taking them orally can increase the lasting effects up to 4 hours with a peak life of 30 minutes. These half-lives of the morphine drugs have significant effects on the addiction and drug abusers? demands and ultimately withdrawal from the addiction.  For the same reason that is to achieve the very goal of euphoria immediately, the illegal drugs traders usually synthesized morphine into heroin as it is more soluble and produce effects faster when compared to morphine. The body quickly absorbs the heroin giving a potent high that abusers usually look for. But final effects of both the morphine and heroin is same as the brain transforms the heroin back to morphine again. But for some even morphine is enough for producing the required joy and feelings of positivity.

  6. Morphine Addition: From Prescription to Abuse  The opioid analgesic drug induces the sensations of euphoria and relaxation and for that reason has been used to treat severe pain. Therefore the very same phenomenon can create a dependency that is known as addiction, even with the prescription drug. That is the person can get immune to the morphine and with the continuous use, can crave for more to satisfy the body.  It can compel the patient to strive for more and more by developing additional patterns on the brain with the overdose of the drug. These properties of the morphine has led to the illicit trade of the drug among the drug user. Hence other than the distribution of morphine under legal brand names Avinza, MS Contin, Kadian and Oramorph morphine is also distributed illegally by street names Morf, Mister Blue, Dreamer, First Line, God's Drug, MS, Morpho, Emsel and Unkie.

  7. Morphine Addiction Treatment Options  Rehabilitation Centers  One way to get rid of morphine addiction is by joining a medicated maintenance program. Such programs offer detox treatments to minimize the withdrawal symptoms and also reduce the chances of relapse through therapeutic treatment. A number of addicts who want to overcome this addiction and family members of many addicts opt for rehabilitation centers for various reasons. There are two types of rehabilitation centers one is ?inpatient rehabilitation center? and other is ?outpatient rehabilitation center?. Inpatient rehabilitation centers provide residential options that are less hospital-like. Whereas, outpatient rehabilitation centers offer programs that vary from days to week with different attending time.  Morphine Agonists  Another treatment option is using morphine agonists like methadone, suboxone, andsubutex under the proper supervision of the physician. Methadone is an opioid itself but less potent and is widely used in the treatment of heroin and morphine addiction. Some reports suggest that methadone treatment success rate is in between 60 to 90 if the treatment is carried for long-term. Treatment is carried out by giving a controlled dose of the agonist on daily basis. Other than methadone similar to methadone suboxone and subutex are also used starting from a dose of 8 mg.

  8. Treatment of Morphine Addiction in Rehabilitation Centers  Some of the treatment methods that rehabilitation centers follow, depending on the ground values and strategic approaches and may be valid for some rehabs and not others are discussed below.  One the treatments used is a cognitive-behavioural therapy which allows patients to identify and overcome the situations that induce desire for addiction.  Motivational incentives is another therapy. Such therapy boosts self-restraint qualities from addictive drugs.  Multidimensional family therapy includes family members of the drug addict by working on their relations.  Motivational interviewing is prepared to motivate the patient for behavioural change and get treatment.  Art therapy  Medications generally include methadone based medicines.  Sauna therapy  Relapse prevention that is based on four psychosocial processes self-efficacy, outcome expectancies, attributions of causality, and decision-making.

  9. Treatment of Morphine Addiction in Rehabilitation Centers  Aromatherapy  Client-centered approaches focus on three behaviours to be conducted by the therapist that is unconditional positive regard, accurate empathy, and genuineness.  Acupuncture  Individual therapy sessions  Journaling  Psychoanalysis  Residential treatment, surrounded by people similar to you builds confidence and being at an amazing near to nature sites contribute to the recovery.  Twelve-step programs  Emotion regulation and mindfulness  Group therapy sessions.
