Puppies 6 months to a year An older puppy that did not have the earlier training and is being started at 6 months of age will still use motivational training for the learning process, depending on the dogs maturity level. 1 year and up Most dogs after 1 year are mature enough to handle the more advanced type of training, which entails off leash training.
