  1. All About BonesThe Skeletal System By Various Students of Mrs. Chicoine’s 2007

  2. Function of the Bones & Skeleton • Support: a frame supports our bodies • Protection: Skull protects our brain, Ribs form a cage that shelters the heart, lungs, liver and spleen and the pelvis protects the bladder • Movement: Muscle attach to bones and move them • Storage: Fat, Calcium other materials used as needed. • Blood Production: In the middle of bones.

  3. Bone Growth • Bone growth consists of columns and multiplying cartilage. • Growth plates found in the middle of growing bones harden by the age of 25.

  4. Bone Cells • Osteoblasts – which makes new bone and help repair damage . • Osteocytes – carry nutrients and waste products to from blood vessels in bones . • Osteoclasts – brakes down bone and help to sculpt and shape it

  5. Video Caring for Bone

  6. Caring for Bone Calcium is needed to make bones hard. You need vitamin D and calcium. The amount of vitamins and minerals that you eat affect how much calcium you have.

  7. Compact Bone

  8. Cancellous or Spongy Bone

  9. Bone Marrow

  10. Ligaments • Bones are fastened to other bones by long fibrous straps called ligaments.

  11. Cartilage • Rubbery, flexible, substance • Supports bone and protects the bones • Three times more slippery than ice • Protects bones where they rub against each other

  12. Joints

  13. Immovable Joints • They don’t move and the dome of the skull is made of bony plates that must not move

  14. Partially Moveable Joints They move a little. They are linked by cartilage. The vertebrate in the spine moves in relation to the one above and below.

  15. Freely Movable • Hinge Joints- Allow movement in one direction, as seen in the knees and elbows. • Pivot Joints- Allow a rotating or twisting motion, like that of the head moving from side to side. • Ball-and-Socket Joints-Allow the greatest freedom of movement. The hips and shoulders have this type of joint, in which.

  16. Fracture • A Fracture occurs when a bone breaks; it may; crack, snap or shatter. After a Bone fracture, new bone cells fill the gap and repair the break.

  17. Osgood-Schlatter Disease • Osgood Schlatter disease is an inflammation of the bone, cartilage, and tendon at the top of the shinbone, where the tendon from the kneecap attaches. OSD usually strikes active teens around the beginning of their growth spurts.

  18. Scoliosis • The Spine curves to much. • It is caused by Heredity or Genetics.
