"Get over here and sit down!" The little girl sauntered over apologetically. "I am having a meeting with this man!" The girl nestled to the woman, and remained silent. Beautiful, I thought. No way I would ever mess with this powerhouse. She continued, "The Lord asks us all the time to care for each other, but we're all so busy keeping what we have that we don't listen. Or we don't want to listen. These children come from terrible situations - drugs, violence, rape, all kinds of horrible, horrible situations." She paused as the girl went back to the door. "There are kids 13 years old having these children, and because they're babies and messed-up themselves, these children are vulnerable to that lifestyle. They're used for the system (welfare) money and discarded. I realized I didn't know. Or somehow didn't want to know. I thought I had my own problems, that I had lived my life well and earned an honest buck, developed a full conscience and even gave a buck or two to the Homeless cardboard guy down in New Haven. But here were these beautiful children, hurt but still brilliant and promising, and I, a "child of God" had really always turned my head away, supposing it was the "nature of things". It's not. Here's a woman, a chance meeting, who collects toys and clothing and staples, and keeps them on her back porch for anyone who needs them.
