Points to remember • Is it switched on? • Does it have batteries? • Is it plugged in? • Are all the relevant parts connected • Are you using the right media?
Audio Tapes • Large collection of speech samples, lecture recordings, etc. • Collection is being updated – check in AV Loans office for details
Videos • Lecture series (if you’ve missed a lecture!) • Guest lectures • Interesting TV programmes/documentaries
Electronic Archive • Under construction • Eventually other media (audio & video cassettes) will be transferred to electronic form • Should be available online • In the meantime, consider getting data from the internet
Internet data I • What is available? • Radio / TV broadcasts • Spoken data collections • Scripts / Transcriptions • Published research • Be careful: How accurate is it? • Where is it from?
Internet data II – where from? • BBC sites • www.bbc.co.uk/radio4 • Search Engines • www.google.co.uk • Movie/TV Scripts • www.dailyscript.com
Technical problems • Do you have the right software? • Is it configured correctly? • Proxy servers and streaming data – ask ISS
Storing data from the internet • Making an audio copy – you need an audio cable (available from AV Loans office) • Storing it on your hard disk • rawavrecorder.homestead.com • Other formats may be available
Ethical issues • These are your responsibility! • University research licence • http://www.era.org.uk/ • What you tell respondents is important! • Make sure they consent to being recorded and taking part in research (signed consent forms are best)
