  1. The Civil War Key Battles A messenger for Lee dropped a copy of the Confederate battle plans, which was found by a Union soldier. Union General McClellan learned of Lee’s divided forces and attacked. The day- long battle took place at Antietam Creek, MD. The battle ended in a draw and was one of the bloodiest battles in the Civil War. Sunday, July 21, 1861, Southern Troops were waiting at Bull Run. This was the first major battle of the Civil War. Confederate soldiers broke the Union lines and won the First Battle of Bull Run. The Confederates attacked on July 1, 1863. Both sides brought more troops. They fought for three days in what was considered the largest battle of the Civil War. The Union won the Battle of Gettysburg, counteracting Lee’s attempt to carry the fight up North. Grant’s Union forces cut off supplies to the Confederate soldiers in Vicksburg, and they ran out of food. The confederates at Vicksburg finally surrendered on July 4, 1863, and the Union gained total control of the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. Battle of Vicksburg: Grant’s Union forces captured the River port of Vicksburg, Mississippi in late May of 1863. Battle of Gettysburg: A small group of Confederate troops discovered Union cavalry near Gettysburg, PA.
