Helping find independence……..one ride at a time!. Presented by Jackie Juhala. I should start by telling you a little about myself!.
E N D
I have been an advocate for People with Disabilities my entire life. I am convinced that it is my calling. I am always working to make things better for people with disabilities.
I have taken many advocacy trainings over the years and have gained much experience. 5 years ago I had the opportunity to work as an advocate!
The Human Service Research Institute out of Portland Oregon was given a grant from The Division of Developmental Disabilities of South Dakota to start a statewide advocacy group.
We formed a group called “South Dakota Advocates for Change”. We traveled to other cities and asked self advocates what they needed and wanted in their lives. In every city we visited, transportation was always something that was important to them.
Spearfish has an excellent transportation system. Many of my friends and people from Northern Hills Training Center don’t use this service enough.
I started by scheduling classes for anyone at Northern Hills Training Center that was interested in gaining more independence. I feel that public transportation promotes independence!
I scheduled 4 classes. In those classes, we told them all about Prairie Hills Transit. The costHow to schedule a rideHow to get a ticketand Regular riders gave testimonials of how easy it is to use!
Prairie Hills Transit gave everyone a ride and the driver answered any questions that the class had.
Last but not least……Prairie Hills Transit agreed to let 3 of our regular riders become “Travel Trainers”
A travel trainer is someone who rides public transportation with a new or inexperienced rider and acts as a teacher and mentor
We successfully encouraged 13 of our friends and peers to get tickets and use Prairie Hills Transit on a regular basis.
My goal is to encourage 10 more people to increase their independence and start using Prairie Hills Transit!
Everyone at Northern Hills Training Center has formed many great friendships with the bus drivers. They are truly our friends. Lisa, Dave, Ray, Chipper and Joe are the best!
Thank You Prairie Hills Transit for improving the lives of People with Disabilities and for the many years of service in Spearfish. My friends and I appreciate all that you do!
Last but not least……..Thank you for partnering with me to help people find independence……….One ride at a time!
