  1. 5 Tips for Hiring a Hardwood Floor Contractor

  2. Comparing Estimates Accurately Various flooring contractors will make different methods of estimates. The information they offer can make it difficult to separate the best from the rest. There is a way to alleviate this difficulty, though. Just ask the contractors to list all the steps they will perform to complete the task. If you are uncertain about any of the steps, make the contractors verify they will be working according to the manufacturer’s guidelines.

  3. Get Everything in Writing After you verify the best contractor for the task, you will want to draw up a contract. Make sure the contract lists the specific products the contractor will use and the specific installation methods. The contract should explicitly state the scope of the job. Adding a penalty clause to the contract is also a common practice. This clause will detail everything that will happen if the job is not completed in the specified time frame.

  4. Split the Payments Never pay the full amount upfront to wood floor contractors. It might be a costly mistake. Consider splitting the payments. One common payment structure is to offer a 30% deposit at first. Then, pay the next 30% when all the materials arrive at the job location. Settle the last 40% only after the contractors finish the job. This payment structure will help prevent the contractor from skirting any responsibilities.

  5. Check References Wood floor contractors worth their salt will have many satisfied customers. Ask to speak to at least three former customers. They should be a mix of recent and older customers. This will give you a better overview of the contractor’s quality of work. If possible, ask the former customers to send photographs of their hardwood floors.

  6. Insurance Policy & Business License You need a contractor on the level and not just anyone you run into while searching for service providers. Ask to see their business license and declaration page from their insurance policy. The business license is a document typically provided by the city or municipality that grants the business authorization to operate in said city or municipality. The declaration page, on the other hand, will give you an overview of the policyholder, who to contact in case of a claim, how much the insurance policy is covered for, and other basic info about the policy.
