  1. Cultural Diffusion in Bangladesh Created by Areebah Armin Ahsan and Naayarah Nimat Ahmed

  2. Introduction • Cultural Diffusion means the mixture or diffusion of one culture’s traditions, social activities, languages, beliefs and other things to another culture, nationality or ethnicity. It can be defined as the migration of one culture to another. It can happen when people migrate from one place to another and their culture is introduced and followed by the people of the migrated country. • It is how culture spreads. • An example of this can be the festivals of other religions and cultures in Bangladesh such as Christmas, Holi, Halloween and others. • Here, we are going to be talking about Bangladesh.

  3. Cultural Diffusion in Bangladesh • The diffusion brings changes in the cultural traits of a country by transferring from one society to another. • As such, Bangladesh is experiencing cultural diffusion throughout time and it has affected our cultures of music, movies, attire, food habits, festivals and many more. • Here, we are going to try to recognize the cultural diffusion that has taken place in Bangladesh overtime.

  4. Food and Food Habit • Perhaps the most evident form of diffusion of culture can be seen in our food habit. The famously termed “Machey-Bhaatey-Bangali” is quite questionable for a large portion of higher class and upper-middle class people of our society. • The introduction of foreign foods has diffused with our food habits such as bread, butter and jelly in breakfast. • People eat a lot of food from foreign countries and cultures. These include Fried Chicken, Macarons, Pizza and others. • In addition, while hosting guests, we now prefer to serve foreign dishes and desserts rather than the mainstream biryani and sweets.

  5. Festivals and Celebrations • Christmas, Holi, Halloween and New Years are some of the most common and widely celebrated festivals in our country though its origin is not here. • These popular celebrations have been infused with our very own modern culture. • The process of diffusion took quite some time to adjust with our religious perspectives and mostly society’s point of view.

  6. Language • Other languages has also diffused in our culture and language. • Some English words are used as a Bangla word • It has caused Bangla words to be almost forgotten as they are no longer that popularly in use anymore. • An example of this can be that now a Chair is called and written as “Chair” in Bangla however, before they were known as “কেদারা” “Kedara”. • The English words are used to an extent that Bangla words are forgotten and not used that much anymore.

  7. Houses and Furnitures • Houses and Furnitures have also developed. • Designs and Styles from other areas have been adopted by the Bangladeshi people • Now, homes are made following styles from abroad • Furnitures are created following styles from other areas. The use of wood has lessened too. • These have become very common and some Bangladeshi designs are not very popular now.

  8. Education • Some schools in Bangladesh follow different curriculums rather than the national one. • For example, The Aga Khan School, Dhaka, follows an IB curriculum. • This shows that the education system is also influenced by other countries. At the present, these are followed and greatly effect the education system of Bangladesh.

  9. Music and Drama • Different genres of music has been adopted and mixed with Bangladeshi songs. • Different types of songs were introduced and people mixed it with Bangladeshi songs. For example, sometimes, rock songs are even mixed with folk songs to come up with a new type of song. • Other country’s drama is also done in Bangladesh today. Different features and characteristics from other dramas are followed and created in Bangladesh now. • People also watch a lot of Hollywood and Bollywood movies. Bangladeshi movies are inspired by those.

  10. Conclusion Bangladesh is an unique example of a multicultural country. Many cultures have influenced the lives of Bangladeshi people. Cultural diffusion has impacted our lives and also helped us develop. However, it has also led to some negative impacts which are related to language.
