  1. Tooth Porcelain Crowns Porcelain Crowns are placed over teeth to reinforce weakened tooth structure. Whether the tooth is cracked, fractured or root canal treated, dental crowns are used to give the additional strength and durability the tooth needs to last. What Are They Made Of? Crowns can be made with metal alone or have a metal base under a tooth-colored covering like porcelain (porcelain fused to metal or PFM crowns). The disadvantage of both these kinds is the esthetic compromise that the metal brings. Porcelain crowns are made purely of porcelain. The porcelain used is durable, highly esthetic, and matches the natural tooth enamel better than PFM crowns. Their main advantage is their superior esthetics, which can be used on front teeth, looking completely honest.

  2. How is a Porcelain Crown Made? The procedure for porcelain crowns is the same as for metal-based crowns. The tooth to be treated requires cutting and shaping to create space for crown cementation. An impression is made of the tooth and sent to the dental lab for fabrication of the crown. At the subsequent appointment, the crown is then cemented onto the prepared tooth with tooth-colored adhesive cement.
