This human-centered approach is at the heart of international consensus: that population is not about numbers, but about people.” - Dr. Nafis Sadik, Executive Director, UNFPA - 1998 Global population reached 6 billion in October of 1999, and isstill rising by 78 million people a year.
Fertility rates, population growth, and population momentum Total fertility rate:number of children a woman gives birth to over a lifetime. Fertility rates are a key determinant of population growth. Even when fertility falls to replacement level, population will continue to grow because of population momentum— the impact of large numbers of young people just entering their reproductive years.
The challenge of rapid population growth • Rapid populationgrowth challenges a country’s ability to: • Ensure economic growth and employment • Provide health services, education, and clean water • Protect the environment • At least 880 million people in developing countries do not have access to modern health services, nearly 1.5 billion do not have clean water, and one-fifth of children do not attend school to grade 5. fertility and population growth ( 4 )
