The Tyne Pedestrian & Cyclist Tunnels Opened on 24th July 1951 Grade II listed Used by 20,000 people per month (10,000 pedestrians and 10,000 cyclists) – contrast with vehicle tunnel which has 38,000 vpd Equipment breakdowns becoming more frequent, more expensive to fix and more difficult to source parts

Owned by Tyne & Wear Integrated Transport Authority Currently operated and maintained by TT2 as part of the New Tyne Crossing contract Cycle tunnel is an important link to the National Cycle Network and the only fixed cycle crossing east of the Millennium Bridge The Tyne Pedestrian & Cyclist Tunnels

  4. Options The minimum – keep the tunnels open but with a reduced service (i.e. one tunnel, two lifts and no working escalators) Investment - take this opportunity to give the tunnels a new lease of life and extend the possibilities for increased footfall The Tyne Pedestrian & Cyclist Tunnels

  5. To justify investment, TWITA would like to see more people make use of the tunnels The purpose of this presentation is to: raise awareness of the opportunities for the future of the tunnels stimulate discussion about present and future possibilities generate ideas The Tyne Pedestrian & Cyclist Tunnels

  6. Nothing will be ruled out at this stage! Contributions will be gathered together in a report to go to TWITA in late March 2010 TWITA will then consider options and decide best way forward The Tyne Pedestrian & Cyclist Tunnels

  7. Thinking so far Fundamentals: Improved signage and links with the Metro system and buses Access – linked to national cycle network but could it be improved? What about pedestrians crossing roads? Safety – lighting, staff visibility, CCTV, paving Reliability – lifts and escalators continually breaking down The Tyne Pedestrian & Cyclist Tunnels We need to know what’s important to you...

  8. Thinking so far Beyond fundamentals: Branding and possible renaming Sponsorship – The Halfords Tunnel? Advertising Health and exercise – developing the ‘Tyne Loop’ Art gallery Concert venue Retail/café development at the Tunnels’ entrances The Tyne Pedestrian & Cyclist Tunnels
