Charlotta A. Bass 1874-1969 “…I have continued this day to work and fight the struggle toward light of a better day.”
Charlotta A. Bass • She was born in Sumter, S.C. • Her birthday was on February 14,1879 • She died in Lake Elsinore, California, 1969 • She spent more than 50 years as a civil rights leader
Charlotta Bass commited herself for civil rights and civil liberties. Her main focus was for the residents of Los Angeles, but she also helped people around the world. On of the main ways she helped was by being the editor and publisher of the California Eagle from 1912 to 1951. She also helped influence the Supreme Court’s decision against racial discrimination for black homeowners.
Other ways she helped: She fought against job discrimination with the slogan: “Don’t shop where you can’t work. ”She helped black business owners get started. She reported about activities of the KKK, and in 1925, was even sued by them (she won the case). Yeh!
Charlotta also fought against police brutality and injustice. She demanded fair treatment for everyone. The FBI watched her until her death because they thought she was a communist. She is famous for her will to help others not be discriminated against, and for her struggles along the way. Two very interesting facts about her to me are: She was the first African-American woman to run for Vice President (1952), and she always felt it was her duty to fight against injustice whenever she saw it.
