University of Louisville – A Brief History • 1798 – Jefferson Seminary • 1846 – KY Legislature created University of Louisville • 1907-1935 – Conformity to accreditation guidelines • 1970 – UofL joins the state system of higher education
University of Louisville today • Kentucky’s preeminent metropolitan research university • 3 campuses: Belknap, Health Science Center, Shelby • 21,725 students comprise the student body • $613 million operating budget

Public Health Preparedness Initiative • Grant from US Health Resources and Services Administration • UofL/UK collaborative effort • Have trained 15,000 people since 2003 • Physicians, dentists, nurses, pharmacists, allied health professionals • mental health and healthcare administration • Veterinarians and others working in agricultural segment
Origins of the Preparedness Initiative • 1999 USPHS/HRSA Primary Care Policy Fellowship • Culminating experience – DHHA Secretary Donna Shalala • Post 9/11 – Center for the Deterrence of Biowarfare and Bioterrorism • Startup funds obtained from CDC in 2002. • Initial focus: standardized patients / cutaenous anthrax, smallpox, etc.
Origins…, cont’d. • Invitations followed to present in a number of venues • HRSA grant announcement: Bioterrorism Training and Curriculum Development Program. • UofL consortium emerged to submit grant • CDBBCenter for Health Hazards Preparedness • Additional grant from National Institute of Hometown Security • Total federal funding > $10,000,000

Environmental Health – Green City Project • Formed in 2004 among Louisville Metro Government, the University of Louisville and the Jefferson County Public Schools • The goal is a greener vision for the city through stronger environmental education, energy efficiency, waste reduction, pollution control and management efforts

Introduction In 1979, OCAW requested a study of the health effects from occupational exposures at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PORTS).A cohort study revealed statistically non-significant elevated SMRs . In 2001, NIOSH was asked by DoE to conduct studies at the Paducah plant. The Universities of Louisville, Kentucky, and Cincinnati commenced a NIOSH-funded study of the workforce through 2003.
