Migration Animals migrate for a variety of reasons. Migration is a behavioral adaptation that helps animals survive.
Ruby-throated Hummingbird The Ruby-throats breed in North America but they migrate south to Mexico and Central America for the winter. These humming birds start leaving the most northern parts of North America around July and usually return sometime around April. It is believed that they fly non-stop across the Gulf, taking 18-20 hours.
Humpback Whale The Humpback whale migrates annually between the Gulf of Alaska and three primary warmer locations south. Traveling around 3,500 miles which takes about 4 to 8 weeks. This is a a gradual process with the youngest arriving first then males and finally pregnant females. The Alaska waters provide a rich feeding ground during the long summer days but as the Alaskan waters turn cold the whales migrate to warmer water. http://www.whalewatchmaui.com/migration.html
