3. 10/3/2011 NGO-Govt Partnership:Gujarat Experience Epidemiological Determinants of Tobacco Use In Gujarat State, India(DV Bala, ILA N Bodiwala, DD Patel, PM Shah – IJCM 2006) A baseline Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) survey of 80,157 subject, on Cancer Awareness and Prevalence of different habits, was conducted in the community in four districts of Gujarat viz. Panchmahals, Banaskantha, Bharuch and Kheda.
Each of these four districts was individually surveyed with a sample of 20,000 subjects.

8. 10/3/2011 NGO-Govt Partnership:Gujarat Experience A STUDY ON TOBACCO PREVALENCE, SOCIAL DISTRIBUTION, ECONOMICAL BURDEN AND QUITTING IN JAMNAGAR URBAN POPULATION (Joshi U, Yadav S) Chewing form of tobacco is a major concern especially in the upper socio-economical classes.
More than 2/3rd of the tobacco consumers know about physiological hazards of tobacco.
Current-tobacco-consumers of the study were expending about 7% to 40% of their monthly income on tobacco and more than 3/4th of the users had not even bothered to pay attention to it till the study time.
After realization, almost half of the smokers and half of the tobacco-chewers immediately showed willingness to completely quit their habit, out of which, 66.96% of chewers and 61.47% of smokers could actually quit it successfully within the period of 6 months.

Nicotine levels were worst in the smoking sections of entertainment venues

State Nodal Officers has been identified and Consultants have been placed.
Two districts viz., Vadodara and Sabarkantha have been selected in the pilot phase.
District Nodal Officers has been identified and the support staff have joined.
The state level World No Tobacco Day 2008 was celebrated at Surat. (NGO and Religious leaders participated)

17. 10/3/2011 NGO-Govt Partnership:Gujarat Experience An Enforcement Plan – All Departments ( Police, Health, Education, F & D & NGO, IMA, etc) To develop the necessary mechanisms, and build confidence and capacity to enforce.
A good enforcement plan should:
Designate the authorities and agents responsible for enforcement and make sure they are trained;
Develop and disseminate material to enable successful enforcement (signage, guidance, details of the legislation);
Include sanctions and regular inspections;
Monitor and communicate progress and support for legislation.

Done in three phases based on ILO Framework esp. focus Tobacco Free Workplaces.

Police Raids on 14 Hookah Parlor June 2008.
The awareness and sensitization programs for masses and esp. police department started from around September 2006.
After the persistent efforts of the organization and NGO-Government partnership Baroda was the first city in India were 14 Hookah Parlours were closed down. 4 major raids took place in the city to the extent that Arabian Nights had to close down even the outlets of sale of hookah instrument.
Under IPC 292,272,273,114 BP Act 131 & COTPA.
Appeal letters for close down of Hookah parlous was issued to Ahmedabad, Surat & Anand. Following were Hookah Parlors were closed down.

Police Complain against Rs. 1 Illegal Cigarettes (Midland, Vip, Spider,Harbour, Rocket, Forever, Furssat etc).
11 police stations proceedings have been started.
As a result of the persistent efforts by Faith Foundation first time in Gujarat and India police detained illegal brand “Rocket” worth Rs. 4 lakh.
