  1. THE HOOK ACTIVITYAKA THE ANTICIPATORY SET An Essential Part of Lesson Planning Professor Kate Ellis Niagara University

  2. The HOOK is … … designed to engage the students’ attention at the beginning of class. Called the “anticipatory set” or the “bell ringer”, it serves as a focus for the day’s activities.

  3. Initiated at the very beginning of class … • … it directs student attention to the learning tasks at hand. • It tells the students what they are about to learn. • It is NOT about rote drill and kill.

  4. The HookEngages students in the topic … • by relating to their own life experiences & background knowledge. • It must be relevant to the students’ individual background and life context.

  5. The HOOK organizes the content by focusing on major concepts to be learned … AND to relate the experiences of the students to the objectives of the lesson. That is, this activity is designed to put students into a receptive frame of mind.

  6. The reason for this activity is to … • Establish the purpose of the lesson • Define what the students are supposed to learn • Examine how this learning will benefit students

  7. Thus, the HOOK should … … create an organizing framework for the ideas, principles, or information that is to follow.

  8. The HOOK is used…To extend the understanding and the application of abstract ideas …through the use of example or analogy

  9. The HOOK is also used anytime a different activity or new concept is to be introduced.

  10. If successful, the HOOK should: help the student get mentally or physically ready for the lesson. Ready, Set, Go!

  11. The HOOK should include: Motivation for learning Transfer of learning A purpose for learning The learningitself

  12. How will you hook your students and keep them engaged?
