H3 vs Non-H3 • There are 2 concentrations of research programmes at NJC • Certain extended research projects are considered as H3. These are graded. • Others are purely for personal enrichment purpose.
Eligibilities • H3 • Offered to IP3 and JC1 students only • Non-H3 • Offered to IP2, IP3 and JC1 students • Strong interest in research
Science Research Programme (SRP) • organised by NUS • Mentored and Assessed by NUS lecturers • Offers a wide range of Science & Engineering Projects • Projects last from July-Dec • Total fees : $500 • Students pay $300; MOE subsidies $200 H3 – SRP (for all Pre-U1 Science students)
SRP • No. of Placements: About 80 (nationwide) • Individual work • Eligibility: 6 points or less for EL and 4 best MA or SC subjects • Selection Criteria: Attitude, Aptitude Test & Research Method Modules • Application Deadline: Feb • Attachment Period: July to Dec H3 – SRP (for all Pre-U1 Science students)
H3 Science Training and Research (H3 STaR) • Organised by NJC for NJC students only • Assessed by NUS lecturers & NJC Teachers • Mentored by scientists from • Institute of Molecular Cell Biology (IMCB) • Some projects commence in June; others in Nov-Dec • Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences (ICES) • 7 weeks in Nov-Dec • Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) • Majority will commence in June and end in Dec H3 STaR (for all NJC Pre-U1 Science students)
H3 STaR • 30 placements (NJC Science) • Offered to all IP3 and JC1 students • Individual work • About 180 hours • Similar selection criteria as SRP • Total fees : $500 • Students pay $300; MOE subsidies $200 H3 STaR (for all NJC Pre-U1 Science students)
Enrichment Science Training and Research (E-STaR) Programme • organised by NJC for NJC students • Mentored by scientists from • Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (IBN) • Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC) • Defence Science & Technology (DSTA) • Offered only to IP2 or IP3 Singaporean students • Attachment from Nov to Jan Non-H3: E-STaR (for all NJC Pre-U1 Science students)
E-STaR Programme • Mentored by scientists from • Institute of Environmental Science and Engineering (IESE) • Division of Physics & Applied Physics, NTU • All except for DSTA projects last from June-Dec • Projects can be extended for another year under the same mentor given both student and mentor are interested. • Individual or pair work Non-H3: E-STaR
E-STaR Programme • Who’s eligible? • attachment at IBN, IESE, IHPC : opened to all IP2/IP3/JC1 students. • attachment at DSTA : opened to only IP2/IP3 students • A total aggregate for English & 4 other Science & Maths of not more than 8 points for JC1 students Non-H3: E-STaR
Nanyang Research Programme (NRP) • organised by NTU • Mentored by NTU lecturers • Projects last from Mar-Dec • 25 students to be nominated from NJC • Aggregate of 8 or below for 6 ‘O’ level including English, Maths and Sci. • Who’s eligible? • IP2, IP3 and JC1 students Non-H3: NRP (for all IP2 and Pre-U1 students)

MOE Local Attachment Programme • Student Attachment programmes at A*STAR • 4-5 weeks in Nov-Dec • About 200 places (nationwide) • Offered to only IP3 or JC1 students Non-H3: MOE LAP (for all Pre-U1 Science students)
MOE Local Attachment Programme • Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB) • Research Area: cell regulation functional genomics, immunology, virology, and drug discovery • Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS) • Research Area: genome-wide expression, high-throughput sequencing, bioinformatics and proteomics Non-H3: MOE LAP (for all Pre-U1 Science students)
MOE Local Attachment Programme • Institute of Material Research and Engineering (IMRE) • Data Storage Institute (DSI) • Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC) • Institute of Chemical & Engineering Sciences (ICES) • Institute of Microelectronics (IME) • Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech) Non-H3: MOE LAP (for all Pre-U1 Science students)
MOE Local Attachment Programme • Selection Criteria: • Good GCE ‘O’ level certificates with distinction in English, any Mathematics subject and any 2 Science subjects • Submission deadline: around May • Selection results: before June Holidays Non-H3: MOE LAP (for all Pre-U1 Science students)
MOE Overseas Attachment Programme • Depends on availability of programme • Participants will receive instruction in mathematics, computer science, physical and biological sciences. • Hands-on practice in scientific research through internship with professional researchers • Field trips and guest lectures • Interact with outstanding students from various countries and with eminent scientists Non-H3: MOE OAP (for all Pre-U1 Science students)
MOE Overseas Attachment Programme • IP3/JC1 students who are Singapore citizens or permanent residents • Selection Criteria: • A1: 2 Maths, 2 Sc • A1/A2: English, 1 Humanities and 1 other subjects in GCE ‘O’ level Examination • Distinction in CCA • Preferably some experience in science research Non-H3: MOE OAP (for all Pre-U1 Science students)
MOE Overseas Attachment Programme • Closing date of application: Mar • 30 students nominated per College • Final interview conducted by MOE for short-listed applicants: End Mar • Selection results: before June Holidays Non-H3: MOE OAP (for all Pre-U1 Science students)
REsearch Attachment Programme (REAP) • Organised by Temasek Life Science Laboratory (TLL) • Selection Criteria: Same selection process as MOE Overseas Programme • Duration: Nov – Dec (7 weeks) • Research Focus: Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Neuroscience, Pathogenesis and Bioinformatics • Number of placements: About 8 (nationwide) Non-H3: REAP (for all Pre-U1 Science students)
Overseas Attachment • Selected students who are attached in NTU under E-STaR Programme will be nominated for the attachment at the Korea Science Academy – 4 weeks in Nov/Dec • Oblige to host the Korean counterparts in August Non-H3: Overseas E-STaR (for NJC E-STaR students)
Applications • All students must complete NJC Research application forms • Students applying to external programme such as NRP are strongly encouraged to complete and submit the forms even though NJC is not the organiser. • You will be shortlisted for the RMT.
Applications • Application to H3 and non-H3 programmes is mutually exclusive. • For non-H3 programmes, students can submit multiple applications to E-STaR, NRP, MOE Attachment or REAP but only 1 offer will be made eventually. • Students interested to take H3 can apply to either SRP or H3 STaR or both but only 1 offer will be made eventually. • Timeline: refer to handout and look out for announcement
