At the end of this lesson, you should know …where the word Angle come from. …what is an Angle. …what Clockwise and Anticlockwise mean. …how some Angles are formed. …about a tool for measuring Angles. Today’s Lesson
The Angle The word “ANGLE” comes from the LATIN word “ANGULUS” which means an ANGLE or CORNER.
What is an Angle? An angle is the amount of turn, rotation or bending between two lines that meet at a point.
Example of an angle larger angle smaller angle

CLOCKWISEANDANTI/COUNTERCLOCKWISE Angles give the measure of the turn between two lines in a clockwise or anticlockwise/counterclockwise direction. Clockwise Anti/Counter-Clockwise
Clockwisemeans moving in the normal direction that the hands of a clock turns. Clockwise
Anticlockwise/Counter clockwise means moving in the opposite direction to which the hands of a clock turns. Anti-Clockwise

Angles in intersecting lines Angles are also formed in lines which cross each other. Angles can occur when lines intersect.

MEASURING ANGLES • Angles are measured in units called DEGREES. • Angles are measured with a tool called a PROTRACTOR. • APROTRACTORis used to accurately measure the DEGREES in an angle (the amount of turn). SYMBOL FOR DEGREES 90 °

WHERE CAN WE SEE ANGLES IN OUR REAL LIFE? Angles can be found all around us. Just take a look around, how many angles can you find?
Why are ANGLES are important One can almost not live without encountering angles in real life. They are everywhere. • Architecture • Carpentry /people that make things • Engineers • Artists • Clocks/ watches • All forms of aircraft: specific angles to land • Ship navigation
HERE ARE SOME MORE AREAS • The Alphabet: Letters such as: L, Y, Z, V, have different angles • Relationship between sun, objects and shadow • Athlete for some sports: throwing javelin ( Keshorn Walcott) • Rotation of planets at different positions • Math: Geometry- Lines and shapes etc.
