Definition of Computer A computer is a machine or device that performs processes, calculations and operations based on instructions provided by a software or hardware program. It is designed to execute applications and provides a variety of solutions by combining integrated hardware and software components.
Input Devices In computing, an input device is a piece of computer hardware equipment used to provide data and control signals to an information processing system such as a computer or information appliance.
TYPES OF INPUT DEVICES • KEYBOARD • MOUSE • JOYSTICK • LIGHTPEN
BAR CODE READER • SCANNER • TOUCH SCREEN • TRACK BALL • WEB CAM • MICRO PHONE
KEYBOARD • A computer keyboard is one of the primary input devices used with a computer. Similar to an electric typewriter, a keyboard is composed of buttons that create letters, numbers, and symbols, as well as perform other functions. The following sections provide more in-depth information and answers to some of the more frequently asked questions about the keyboard.
TYPES OF KEYBOARD Keyboard types • Standard • Laptop-size • Flexible keyboards • Handheld • Thumb-sized • Multifunctional
MOUSE • A mouse is a small handheld input device that controls a computer screen's cursor or pointer in conjunction with the way it is moved on a flat surface. The mouse term name originates from its likeness to a small, corded and elliptical shaped device that looks like a mouse tail. Some mouse devices have integrated features, such as extra buttons that may be programmed and assigned with different commands.
TYPES OF MOUSE 1) Mechanical mice 2) Optical and laser mice 3) Inertial and gyroscopic mice 4) 3D mice 5) Tactile mice 6) Pucks 7) Ergonomic mice 8) Gaming mice
JOYSTICK • A joystick is an input device consisting of a stick that pivots on a base and reports its angle or direction to the device it is controlling. A joystick, also known as the control column, is the principal control device in the cockpit of many civilian and military aircraft, either as a center stick or side-stick. It often has supplementary switches to control various aspects of the aircraft's flight.
LIGHT PEN • A light pen is a computerinput device in the form of a light-sensitive wand used in conjunction with a computer's cathode-ray tube (CRT) display
BAR CODE READER • A bar code reader (or bar code scanner) is an electronic device that can read and output printed barcodes to a computer. Like a flatbed scanner, it consists of a light source, a lens and a light sensor translating for optical impulses into electrical signals.Additionally, nearly all barcode readers contain decoder circuitry analyzing the bar code's image data provided by the sensor and sending the barcode's content to the scanner's output port.
SCANNER • An image scanner—often abbreviated to just scanner, although the term is ambiguous out of context (barcode scanner, CT scanneretc.)—is a device that optically scans images, printed text, handwriting or an object and converts it to a digital image. Commonly used in offices are variations of the desktop flatbed scanner where the document is placed on a glass window for scanning.
TOUCHSCREEN • Touch screen, is an input device and normally layered on the top of an electronic visual display of an information processing system. A user can give input or control the information processing system through simple or multi-touch gestures by touching the screen with a special stylus or one or more fingers.[1] Some touchscreens use ordinary or specially coated gloves to work while others may only work using a special stylus or pen. T
TRACK BALL • A trackball is a pointing device consisting of a ball held by a socket containing sensors to detect a rotation of the ball about two axes—like an upside-down mouse with an exposed protruding ball.[1] The user rolls the ball to position the on-screen pointer, using their thumb, fingers, or commonly the palm of the hand while using the fingertips to press the mouse buttons.
WEBCAM • webcam is a video camera that feeds or streams its image in real time to or through a computer to a computer network. When "captured" by the computer, the video stream may be saved, viewed or sent on to other networks travelling through systems such as the internet, and e-mailed as an attachment.
MICROPHONE • A microphone, colloquially nicknamed micis a transducer that converts sound into an electrical signal. • Microphones are used in many applications such as telephones, hearing aids, public address systems for concert halls and public events, motion picture production, live and recorded audio engineering, sound recording, two-way radios, megaphones, radio and television broadcasting, and in computers for recording voice, speech recognition, VoIP, and for non-acoustic purposes such as ultrasonic sensors or knock sensors.
