Here are 20 of the most haunted places across the country: Jeff Stoll 1. The Winchester Mystery House (San Jose, CA) - This massive and maze-like mansion was built by Sarah Winchester, widow of gun magnate William Winchester. It is filled with staircases and doors leading to nowhere, built to confuse the ghosts that Sarah believed were haunting her. 2. The Stanley Hotel (Estes Park, CO) - This hotel inspired Stephen King's novel "The Shining" after he stayed in room 217. Guests have reported seeing ghosts in the ballroom and hearing children playing in the halls. 3. The Amityville Horror House (Amityville, NY) - Site of a tragic mass murder, this house is said to be a portal for demons. Subsequent residents reported paranormal activity including visions of the murdered family members. 4. Eastern State Penitentiary (Philadelphia, PA) - Once the most famous and expensive prison in the world, it is now abandoned. Visitors have spotted ghostly inmates still serving time behind its walls. 5. The Palace Theater (Marathon, FL) - A hotspot for paranormal researchers, staff have witnessed flying objects, heard disembodied voices, and seen a ghostly woman in white wandering the halls. 6. The Sultan's Palace (New Orleans, LA) - This mansion is considered America’s most haunted home. Reported paranormal activity includes loud banging noises, phantom footsteps, shadow people, and blood dripping from the walls. 7. Congress Plaza Hotel (Chicago, IL) - One of Chicago’s oldest hotels, it's haunted by the ghost of a young boy who drowned in the hotel pool. Guests report being woken by phantom noises and seeing apparitions in their rooms. 8. The Dakota (New York City, NY) - Best known as the location of John Lennon’s murder in 1980, this luxury apartment building has had ghost sightings over the years, including that of a little girl crying by the stairs. 9. Visitors report seeing shadow figures, hearing screams at night, and strange orbs showing up in photos. 12. The Bell Witch Cave (Adams, TN) - This cave is said to be haunted by the infamous Bell Witch who terrorized the Bell family in the early 1800s. Her voice can still be heard echoing in the cave to this day. 13. Gettysburg Battlefield (Gettysburg, PA) - Site of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, ghostly soldiers still haunt these grounds. Phantom sounds of gunshots, drums, and screams have been reported, as well as soldier sightings. 14. The White House (Washington, D.C.) - Full of storied history and turbulent events, America's most famed residence has seen its share of ghosts. President Harrison still tinkers by the attic window. The ghosts of the Whaley's have been seen and heard throughout the house, including their young daughter who plays in the garden. 16. RMS Queen Mary (Long Beach, CA) - Now a floating hotel, several ghosts haunt this historic ocean liner. Splashes can be heard coming from the 1st class pool, even though it's empty. A lady in white wanders the ship, stopping guests to ask if they've seen her children. 17. The Bourbon Orleans Hotel (New Orleans, LA) - This hotel sits on top of a theater where a dancer named Louise was killed over 170 years ago. Many guests have awakened to find her ghost standing over their beds, her dancing feet stepping atop their mattresses. 18. Hangman's Tree (Fort Lauderdale, FL) - This massive oak, located near an inland waterway, was once the site of legal executions. Visitors have claimed to see ghostly figures dangling from its branches. The dark spirits are said to follow people who dare take a twig or leaf from the cursed tree. 19. Moon River Brewery (Savannah, GA) - Previously a warehouse where slaves were bought and sold, this haunted brewery's staff have witnessed bottles fly through the air, felt unseen forces pinch them, and heard disembodied whispering coming from dark corners after hours. 20. Crybaby Bridge (Doylestown, OH) - According to local legend, a woman once threw her baby off this bridge.
