Why Does Wickedness Happen? Based on the 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire, “Wicked”, dubbed as the untold story of the witches of Oz, tells the story of the unlikely friendship between two girls – blonde and beautiful Galinda and green-skinned Elphaba – and how they became Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West, respectively. Set in the time before Dorothy dropped in, “Wicked” is an ingenious reimagining of Baum’s classic story that provides an insight on the distinction between goodness and wickedness. A Defiant Hit Did you know, however, that the musical didn’t start off on the right foot? Critics panned “Wicked” after it premiered at the Gershwin Theatre on October 30, 2003. Some called it “overproduced” and “overblown”, while others slammed its plot and its preachy tone. Despite these negative reviews, “Wicked” became a surprise hit on Broadway, mostly due to word-of-mouth. The musical then went on to receive 10 Tony Award nominations and win 3, including Best Actress for Idina Menzel (who originated the role of Elphaba on Broadway). Its original cast album also received a Grammy award for Best Musical Show Album. More than a decade after it opened on Broadway, “Wicked” continues to soar high. Just this year, the show managed to surpass “The Phantom of the Opera” at the Broadway box office after earning $1.12 billion in sales. So far, “Wicked” has been translated into six languages and has been performed in more than 100 cities in 13 countries around the world. What’s With Wicked? Theater critics noted that, along with “Les Miserables”, “Wicked” has the rare distinction of enrapturing everyone’s imagination in spite of negative reviews. Perhaps it’s due to the fact that people are still enamored by fantastical lands like Oz. Its success could also be attributed to the resonating enemies-turned-friends story between Elphaba and Glinda. It’s also hard not to be enamored by composer Stephen Schwartz’s movie score-like music, or be intrigued by Winnie Holzman’s subtle references to the 1939 MGM film. Perhaps the most impressive part of the show is the Act 1 showstopper “Defying Gravity”, where Elphaba Page | 2
dramatically rises up the stage and belts a pop anthem as an act of defiance against the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. This just goes to show how “Wicked” was able to defy all odds the way its main character defied gravity.
