Be the boss of your own hair with the right wig. • Shortage of hair is a common experience for a lot of us. And no matter what the reason – naturally receding hairline, bad nutrition, pollution, hair loss or illnesses (such as cancer). And while there are those who don’t really mind it, for the majority, it’s not a happy situation for most of us.
A recent survey by an institute that studies human behaviour and psychology suggests that having hair or not having it can create a marked difference in the way we feel about ourselves. It affects our self-esteem and self-confidence in very real ways. So if you are feeling a bit ‘down and out’, don’t reach out for that pill immediately. Think : Could it all boil down to your hair (or, well, the lack of it)? The answer is, it could. The good news? There’s a way out: The wig. Yes - wigs are not only the convenient solution to re-engineer and re-invent our looks, they can also dramatically alter the way we think and feel about ourselves. Doesn’t matter whether it is a corporate scenario (such as an important client presentation where you need to make a killer impression), a social situation (a re-union of school friends) or a personal moment (in front of the mirror) - the impact a wig can make, and the change they can introduce in our lives (and lifestyles) – is often huge.
Here’s how you go about selecting one. When choosing a wig, it is often difficult to know where to begin and where to end. With oodles of styles, colors, brands and types to choose from, picking out the right wig for the first time can seem, to say the least, a bit overwhelming. Understanding the differences between human hair wigs and synthetic wigs is a good starting point for selecting the perfect one. In fact, it’s perhaps the most important decision you will take when selecting a wig. Synthetic wigs are trending nowadays. Telling the difference between a synthetic and real one isn’t always easy, but here’s a thumb rule: Pull out a strand of hair from the wig and burn it. If it’s made of natural hair, it will catch fire slowly. If it’s synthetic, though, it will melt or ball-up quickly. The second difference is that natural hair will give off an odour – which synthetic hair will not. Of course, you can always take a ‘guide’ along with you : Maybe a hair expert, or a friend or relative who’s an ‘old pro’ at using wigs.
Synthetic hair comes with a headful of benefit. First off, they come in amazing ‘lookalikes’ of protein-rich hair fibbers which are hard to differentiate from real hair (they could even fool a hair expert!). Secondly, because synthetic wigs have something called “style retention”, you don’t have to keep ‘styling’ them before every use : Just wash, dry and shake them out - and the wig is back in its original avatar – ready to use (great, right?). Thirdly, they come in a variety of cuts, colours, shapes and textures - so you can pick one that’s just right for your face. Fourthly, they are easy to maintain. Fifthly, they are lightweight, and therefore convenient for daily use. And finally, they tend to be on the less expensive side. Is there a flip side to synthetic hair? Like all good things in life, there is: Synthetic hair isn’t always coloror re-color friendly, can sometimes look, well, ‘synthetic’ (giving away the fact that you’re wearing a wig!), and must be kept away from hot-rollers, hair-driers and irons (both the flat and curling variety).
So what about natural hair? Natural hair, as you would expect, has a more natural appearance as compared to synthetic hair. They need the same styling and maintenance as your ‘real hair’, so there are no surprises in that department. What’s more, they can be custom-coloured – so you can mix and match them to your wardrobe. Finally, they tend to be more durable and long-lasting than their synthetic counterparts. On to the ‘cons’ of natural hair now. Natural hair tends to be ‘high maintenance’ as compared to synthetic hair, need to be ‘reset and restyled’ after you shampoo, and tends to fade (oxidize) when out in the sun. When it comes to a headful of natural, flowing hair, not all of us are equally blessed. That’s exactly where wigs come in as a truly heaven-sent – making you look and feel great - again! Easily available, with no stigmas attached, and with a versatile range of qualities, colours and styles to choose from – wigs let you do what you’ve always wanted (but can’t remember the last you actually could!): • Be the boss. Of your own hair.
