Breast Implants: Saline vs. Silicone Considering breast augmentation surgery? If so, you’re likely thinking about what type of breast implant you would like: Silicone or saline. There are benefits to each type, and you may find a type that will help you provide the look you’re hoping to achieve. But chances are you have questions. What are the differences between silicone and saline? What are the benefits of both? And which type should I choose? The list of questions goes on and on. To help you begin to research the differences between silicone and saline breast implants, we wanted to provide a quick overview of both. Silicone Breast Implants Silicone implants have become an extremely popular choice for breast augmentation. Essentially, these implants consist of a silicone
shell filled with a thick elastic gel that mimics the feel of natural breast tissue. They are typically chosen because they have a more natural feel and shape. Plus, silicone implants are slightly lighter, which can reduce downward displacement. As for some of the disadvantages, silicone implants are slightly more expensive relative to saline implants. And since they are inserted pre-filled, the incision may be slightly larger, but this isn’t always true. In many cases, the difference in size of incision may be negligible. Finally, there’s a misconception that silicone breast implants are more prone to leaking. Today, though, the technology has greatly evolved. Silicone implants on the market today are designed with a cohesive gel that holds shape in the event of a rupture. Yet, this can result in “silent rupture,” meaning that because the implant holds shape, it can be more difficult to determine if a rupture has happened. Regular MRIs, though, can help ensure the health of the implant. Saline Breast Implants Saline implants are another popular choice, and they use a similar design compared to silicone implants. Saline implants are comprised of a silicone shell filled with sterile salt water, which is known medically as saline. The shell is inserted empty during surgery, which the surgeon fills once the implants are in place. One advantage: Saline implants are relatively more affordable. Plus, with saline implants, ruptures are more evident. Compared to silicone implants, though, saline does have a rounder appearance and the feel is often compared to a water balloon. Thus,
they may look and feel less natural. For patients with little breast tissue, saline implants often provide a rounder appearance, and silicone is often recommended. Saline implants are better suited for women with a greater volume of breast tissue. This is just a quick overview of the two most common types of breast implants.
