North Garland Montessori School (NGMS) was established in 1997 under the direction of Mr. Manooch Varasteh. NGMS pioneered Montessori education in Garland. Our school is the first and oldest non-sectarian Montessori School in Garland. We believe and practice the educational philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) to help children everywhere reach their maximum learning potential, while becoming well balanced individuals. Our overall objective of the Schoolu2019s activities is to promote u201cExcellence in Educationu201d using the Montessori Method, implemented by our teachers and our children in close cooperation with parents.

Our curriculum consists of the ?ve areas of Montessori Education, integrated for the total development of your child. Practical Life – learn to perform daily tasks, such as, developing the independence and sense of responsibility of the child and physical coordination. They are going to start working with the practical life materials to develop their concentration, coordination and order. They learn grace and courtesy. The teacher shows the child how to walk, how to carry a tray and how to set it down quietly. The child copies the teacher’s behavior. Sensorial – develops the sensory-motor capabilities of the ?ve senses. Sensorial education also provides the basis for other areas of development. The second area of Montessori education is Sensorial materials which are designed to convey an abstract idea in concrete form. The knobbed cylinders give the experience of widest diameter to the narrowest diameter, largest to the smallest, shortest and widest to the tallest and thinnest. The sandpaper tablets give the experiences of rough, rougher, roughest and smooth, smoother, smoothest. The pink tower demonstrates volume and size. The red rods show the concept of length, etc. The materials involve use of hand. In the process of working with sensorial materials children acquire a broad knowledge in language and use it spontaneously in their life: dark, darker, darkest, etc. There will be substantial vocabulary enlargement in this area. Language & Phonics – The next area of learning is language; children are being introduced to the sounds of letters and developing skills in hearing, speech, reading, writing and drama. The phonetic approach using sandpaper letters and the word-building kits takes new readers basic matching, word recognition and phrase-reading exercises to the point where they can con?dently tackle sentences and stories. The prepared environment with the materials in an ordered progression makes learning possible for the child. Mathematics – Montessori arithmetic is taught as early as three, by giving the child objects to hold, count and manipulate. These help him learn the fundamentals of simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to ensure a good math foundation before the child enters Primary One. In mathematics, our children are introduced to numbers and establish a solid basis for understanding the decimal system. At the end of the primary stage the children should have good knowledge of addition, subtraction, and multiplication and division. Cultural & Geography – geography, history and science concepts are illustrated by simple experiments, charts, stories and educational excursions. Our children also study many other areas such as geography, land and water forms, and the names of continents and countries.
