Choosing the Right Lubricant for Your Air Compressor
Lubricant in a compressor, or any lubricant, in fact, is designed to cool, clean, protect, separate the moving parts, carry away your contaminants and render any nasties that get into the oil as neutral. As they age, as these products additives get used up, they need to be replaced and what happens is there's a variety of different types of base oils and a variety of different type of additives that are incorporated into an oil or formulated into an oil to give its performance characteristics. You'll hear there's synthetic types of lubricants, food grade types of lubricants, there are medicinal lubricants, there's a whole range of different ones. They're all formulated on basically what your compressor needs. It comes back to what does your compressor need? Well, the first thing to do is consult with the manual and the manual of the OEM will tell you what its preferred requirements are. But there are things like food grade oil and food grade oil are used where the oil may come in contact with the food. You end up with synthetic lubricants, which is getting quite a lot of comment at the moment. Synthetic lubricants are generally used when there are high temperatures involved because they handle the high temperatures much better.
They have less vaporisation which means there's less oil loss from the top, they don't oxidize up which means the machine stay cleaner, but you've got to make sure you consult with the manual because some lubricants aren't compatible with certain types of seals that are inside.
