It is dissolved by fuel and lubricants, softened by water, and oxidized more quickly by sunlight. In twenty years, unsealed tarmac can lose half its thickness. The original black color tends to fade after about a year. Asphalt's binder starts to become less malleable. Hairline fractures appear.
