Which unhealthy fats should be avoided?
There are several types of unhealthy fats that you should limit or avoid in your diet. Here are some examples: 1. Saturated fat: Saturated fat is a type of fat that usually comes from animals and dairy products. It can increase bad cholesterol (LDL) levels in the blood and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Foods containing saturated fat include red meat, butter, cream, cheese and full-fat dairy products. 2. Trans fat: Trans fat is an artificial fat created during the hydrogenation of vegetable oils. They can increase bad cholesterol levels and decrease good cholesterol (HDL) levels in the blood, causing blockages and inflammation in blood vessels. Foods containing trans fats include processed foods, cakes, quick breads, fried dough and hard margarine.
3. Partially saturated fat: Partially saturated fat is a form of fat found in processed vegetable oils. Although they are less harmful than saturated fats and trans fats, they should still be limited. Foods that contain partially saturated fats include palm oil, sunflower oil and peanut oil. 4. Bad fats synthesized from high-heat cooking: When oils and fats are melted at high temperatures, they can create bad fats such as aldehydes and inflammatory substances. Therefore, limit the use of high-heat cooking oils and fried foods. To maintain a healthy diet, limit your consumption of these unhealthy fats and replace them with healthy fat sources such as olive oil, nuts, avocados and omega-3 rich fish.
