If you’re a blogger or someone looking for a simple and easy Photo Retouching tutorial on how to make teeth whiter using Photoshop, this is it. If you don’t have it, you can download a free trial here. Step 1: Choose an Image First, choose an image to work with. An image of a person who is smiling or laughing or is showing off her or his teeth clearly will work best. Choose a high resolution image most preferably in a raw file format. Original Photo 1

To start, I got this picture of a woman from pexels.com where you can download commercially free images. If you zoom in a little closer, you could see yellow stains on her teeth which gives us a great opportunity to try new set of photo editing skills like brightening and whitening teeth. Later on, we will be able to use Layer Mask effectively which you will further understand as we go thru this Photoshop tutorial. Step 2: Using the Lasso Tool Select Lasso Tool in theToolbar that is usually found on the left part of your screen or your workspace. Lasso tool is useful for drawing freeform segments of a selection border which comes very handy in this kind of photo retouching work. 2

Step 3:Tracing Around The Teeth using Lasso Tool Drag or trace around the teeth outlines as smoothly as you can. Remember, that you could always clean up the edges later. Do not worry, your first time would not be so accurate but you’ll get the hang of it after a few practice with the help of this photoshop tutorial. 3

Step 4: Adding Hue or Saturation in the Adjustment Layer In the Layer’s Panel, usually found at the lower right side of your screen. Click on New Fill in the Adjustment Layer’s icon found at the bottom. If the Layer’s Panel doesn’t show by default on your Photoshop workspace, Go to Windows > Layers to show the Layers Panel. After choosing New Fill or Adjustment Layer icon, click on Hue or Saturation on the dropdown list. A new layer will appear on the Layer’s Panel above the layer òf the image that we initially were working on. 4

Step 5: Adjusting Properties of the Image To control Hue or Saturation go to Properties panel where you will find the adjustment layer. This will enable you to set specific options such as editing a specific color property, for instance the yellow shades on an image. Setting the Edit option to Master means, the effect will apply to all colors on the image uniformly. But if you click on the dropdown list and choose Yellows, only the yellow properties will be selected and adjusted on the image, the other areas will remain the same. This way, we can selectively remove yellow stains on the teeth easily. 5

Step 6: Adjusting The Saturation Level Of Yellow Areas Select the Saturation slider. Drag towards the left to lower the level of saturation and opposite ì otherwise. The further left the slider is dragged, the more desaturated the yellow will be. This will make the teeth appear whiter or lighter. Remember that naturally, teeth have yellow stains on them so you don’t want to overdo or move the slider all the way to the left. 6

Note: Teeth with some yellow stains look more natural The saturation setting will be based on how yellow the teeth once were on the image. As for this image, a -30 Saturation Value is good enough. If you are able to follow this easily, you on the right track on becoming an expert in photo retouching. Comparing Results: Before And After You can compare the whitened version vs the original image by clicking the Adjustment Layer’s visibility icon in the Layers panel. Temporarily hide the effects, by clicking on it once to view the original image. 7

Toggle on the visibility icon to compare the original image with the whitened version. To see the improvement by this time. here is the image we are working on. The left half of the image is how the teeth looked like. The other right half is how it looked after the removal of yellow stains on the teeth. Step 7: Lightening or Brightening Now that the teeth of our subject has been whitened, next step is to brighten it up a bit. Set Edit option in the Properties panel back to Master from Yellow so that we can adjust all colors at the same time. 8

Setting Edit back to Master. Click on the Lightness slider. Start to drag towards the right to brighten the teeth. The further right you drag, the lighter the teeth will become. Look closely on your image as you drag the slider so that it will not get brightened too much. For this image, a +10 Lightness value works fine. Note: To Lighten or Brighten teeth drag the Slider to the Right. 9

As you can see in the image below, the teeth appears brighter but there are accidental brightening in the gums across the top and bottom area of the teeth. So, the more accurate you are during the tracing of the outline of the teeth teeth with the Lasso Tool, the better your editing will be. You may notice, there will be areas around the teeth that also have been unpurposely brightened, this resulted from on tracing poorly with the Lasso tool. Step 8: Using The Brush Tool on the Layer Mask Fix and clean up around the proximity of the teeth, a paint or brush tool will become handy in this step. 10

Selecting the Brush or Paint Tool Select the Brush Tool and paint on the area of the teeth where you see excess edges to clean up. A small, soft-edge brush will definitely work best on a tight area like this. You can adjust the size and opacity of your brush as well on their properties panel. Normally, we don't see the brush color as we paint, since we're painting on the layer mask and not on the image itself. Instead, we could see the effects of the brush on the Hue or Saturation. 11
