People who have already donated for many major charities worldwide have spoken about the same issue: not knowing what happens with the money or whether these really get to help others as intended. Many make donations to tax deductible charities in order to lower yearly taxes, but also to be a part of something bigger and make a real difference.

  3. The trouble with the big charities is that they are a target for corruption. Or, they have many employees that need to be paid, along with many other administrative expenses. It happens that as much as 90% of a donation is used to pay those instead of going directly to the cause. Not every charity the Government funds is in that bad category, though. Smallpox eradication, for that matter, was one of the fair, working ones.

  4. It's better to donate to small or local charities, for the reason of better transparency and real efficiency. The age and popularity of the organization has a major role in it, though: new, unknown charities need more money to function and get to higher levels.
