  2. KnowMoreAboutBone-Anchored HearingAid(BAHA) Bone-anchoredhearingdevicesareimplantabledevicesusedtoimprovehearingbytransmittingsounddirectlytotheinner ear through the skull. Sound energy causes vibrations in the skull which are transmitted to the inner ear, which results in hearing.Theyhavebeensuccessfullyusedtoimprovepatients'hearingformorethan30years. Bone anchored hearing devices may be an effective solution for multiple varieties of hearing loss. Some patients are incapableofwearinghearingaidsduetothesizeoftheearcanal,chronicdrainage,orseverehearingloss.ABAHAmaybea solution for these patients, however a bone anchored hearing devices are not a solution for every patient. Whether or not a bone anchored hearing device may be an effective solution for you will depend on your type of hearing loss, quantity of hearing loss, physical examination, and hearing history. This information will be discussed with your Coastal provider to determineifaboneanchoredhearingdeviceisrightforyou. Each bone-anchored hearing device consists of an implanted titanium fixture and a detachable sound processor that clips ontothatfixture.Usingaminimallyinvasiveprocedure,aboneanchoredhearingdeviceissurgicallyimplantedintheskull behind the ear. Surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, meaning patients can return home after the procedure. After healinghasoccurredandthedevicehasintegratedintotheskull,theboneanchoredhearingdeviceisactivated,facilitating hearing.

KnowtheTypesofHearingLoss SensorineuralHearingLoss Sensorineural hearing loss, also known as “nerve loss,” is a result of damage to the microscopic hair cells within the inner earand/ortothenerveofhearing.Thisdamagecanbeduetogenetics,advancingage,ornoiseexposure.Ifyouareworried about hearing loss, call us to get an appointment with one of the doctors at any three locations: Neptune, Holmdel or Manahawkin, New Jersey. Approximately 90% of hearing losses are sensorineural. In fact, most people who wear hearing aids have sensorineural hearing loss. In most cases, these types of hearing loss are permanent and cannot be treated by medicationorsurgery.Hearingaidsarethustheprimarymodeoftreatment.Incasesofsevereorprofoundcases,cochlear implantsmaybeaconsideration.   5. KnowWhatAreTheBenefitsof HearingAids? Hearing loss has social, professional, and health impacts. Multiple studieshaveshownthatunaddressedhearinglosscanleadtosocial isolation, loneliness, and depression. Perhaps due to the lack of interpersonal interaction, hearing loss is also linked to cognitive declineanddementia. Wearing hearing aids is about more than improving hearing. When you can hear and understand what others are saying, you are more involved in your life. You can carry on conversations and connect withcolleaguesandthoseyoulove.Hearingwellreducesyourriskof accidentsandalsofosterslong-termcognitivehealth.

KnowMoreAboutCustomEarmolds Custom earmolds are made to specifically fit the size and shape of your individual ear, which provides for a more comfortable fit compared to many over-the-counter options. The tighter, more accurate fit provides for a better seal to protect against noise exposure or to keep water out of the ear. An audiologist takes impressionsofeachearusingasiliconematerial;theseimpressions are then sent out to an earmold manufacturer who will make the molds specific for each order. Earmolds are available in various materialsandcolors.Forchildren,itisrecommendedthattheyuse earmolds attached to their hearing aids. Since their ears are constantlygrowingandchanginginsizeandshape,theaudiologist will need to monitor the fit of the earmolds at regular follow-up appointments. Cont....

SomeCommonTypesofCustom Earmolds MusicianMolds Musicianmoldsfilterouthighlevelsofnoisewithoutchangingthesoundqualityof music.Thistypeofmoldisavailableinachoiceofthreedifferentfiltersdepending on the amount of sound attenuation that is needed. It is recommended for musiciansorfrequentconcertattendees. SwimMolds Swim molds prevent water from getting into the ear canal. Swim molds are recommendedforindividualswitheartubes,surfers,andpeoplewhofrequentlyget swimmer’sear. HearingProtection Hearing Protection attenuates the level of sound reaching the ear to help reduce damage to inner ear function and potential hearing loss from exposure to loud noise.Thesearerecommendedforhunters,targetshooters,andindividualswho haveanoccupationthatexposesthemtodangerousnoiselevels.

KnowMoreAboutCochlear Implants A cochlear implant is an electronic device that restores partial hearingtothedeaf.Itissurgicallyimplantedintheinnerearand activatedbyadevicewornoutsidetheear.Unlikeahearingaid,it does not make sound louder or clearer. Instead, the device bypasses damaged parts of the auditory system and directly stimulates the nerve of hearing, allowing individuals who are profoundlyhearingimpairedtoreceivesound.
