KNOWABOUTVOCAL CORDLESIONS Areactivevocalcordlesionisamasslocatedoppositean existingvocalcordlesion,suchasavocalcordcystor polyp.Thistypeoflesionisthoughttodevelopfrom traumaorrepeatedinjurycausedbythelesiononthe oppositevocalcord.Areactivevocalcordlesionwill usuallydecreaseordisappearwithvoicerestand therapy.

  3. VOCALCORDPARESIS/PARALYSIS Hoarsenessandotherproblemscanoccurrelatedtoproblemsbetween thenervesandmuscleswithinthevoiceboxorlarynx.Themost commonconditionisaparalysisorweaknessofoneorbothvocalcords. Involvementofbothvocalcordsisrareandisusuallymanifestedby noisybreathingordifficulty gettingenoughairwhilebreathingor talking. However,onevocalcordcanbecomeparalyzedorseverely weakened(paresis)afteraviralinfectionofthethroat,aftersurgeryin theneckorcheek,orforunknownreasons.

  4. PRESBYPHONIA (AGINGVOICE) Aspartofthenormalagingprocess,themuscles thatsustainandsupportourvocalfolds(cords), aswellasthestructureofthelarynx(voicebox), mayalterandchange.Thesechanges,thatcan affectthewayweuseourvoiceandtheway it sounds,usuallyoccurafterage60.

  5. KNOWABOUTSPASMODIC DYSPHONIA Spasmodicdysphonia,alsoknownaslaryngeal dystonia,isarareneurologicaldisorder characterized byinvoluntarymusclespasmsof thelarynx(voicebox).Spasmodicdysphonia causesthevoicetobreak,ortohaveatight, strainedorstrangledquality.

PROFESSION ALVOICE Anoccupationalorprofessionalvoice userisanyonewhosevoiceisessential totheirjob.Weareallaccustomedto thinkingofsingers, actors, actresses, andbroadcastpersonalitiesas professionalvoice users.Indeed, specialoruniquequalitiesofthevoice areoftentheessentialfeatureoftheir careers.Butwhataboutother occupationalvoiceusers?

KNOWABOUTVOCAL CORDCANCER Tobaccouseisthemostpreventablecauseof thesedeaths.IntheUnited States, upto 200,000peopledieeachyearfromsmoking- relatedillnesses.Thegoodnewsisthatthis figure hasdecreasedduetotheincreasing numberofAmericanswhohavequitsmoking. Thebadnewsisthatsomeofthesesmokers switchedtosmokelessorspittobacco, assumingitisasafealternative.Thisis untrue.

KNOWABOUTTHROAT CANCER Throatcancerisaveryseriouscondition requiringimmediatemedicalattention.When cancerattacksthevocalcords,thevoicechanges inquality,assumingthecharacteristicsof chronichoarseness,roughness,orraspiness. Thesesymptomsoccuratanearlystageinthe developmentofthecancer.Itisimportantto rememberthatpromptattentiontochangesin thevoicefacilitateearlydiagnosisthusearlyand successfultreatmentofvocalcordcancercanbe obtained.

KNOWABOUTMORE LARYNGITIS Throatcancerisaveryseriouscondition requiringimmediatemedicalattention.When cancerattacksthevocalcords,thevoicechanges inquality,assumingthecharacteristicsof chronichoarseness,roughness,orraspiness. Thesesymptomsoccuratanearlystageinthe developmentofthecancer.Itisimportantto rememberthatpromptattentiontochangesin thevoicefacilitateearlydiagnosisthusearlyand successfultreatmentofvocalcordcancercanbe obtained.

  10. PAINWITHSWALLOWING (ODYNOPHAGIA) The larynx has multiple functions, including voice production, cough, and airway protection. Thelarynxalsoacts asaconduitforbreathing. Pathologic conditions that affect normal laryngeal function can result in poor cough production, aspiration with subsequent pneumonia, change in phonation, and dysphagia.Chondronecrosisofthelarynxisa rare complication encountered in otolaryngology.

LARYNGOPHARYNGEAL/ GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUXDISEASE Laryngopharyngeal reflux, also known as LPR, is a condition that can occur in patients who have been diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease, also knownasGERD.Acidfromthestomachrisesupward, towardstheesophagus,andentersthebackofthe throat. Patients with LPR report experiencing a bitter taste and the feeling that something is caught in the back of their throat. In some cases, LPR can cause breathingdifficulties.

  12. PARKINSON'SDISEASE RELATEDVOICEDISORDER Ithasbeenestimated thatmorethan70%ofpatients with Parkinson’s disease experience voice and speech disorders. Some report that dysphonia, impairment in the ability to speak normally, is one of the disease’s mostdisruptivesymptoms. People with Parkinson’s induced dysphonia are described as having a harsh, weak or breathy quality to their voices. There are, however, medical and behavioraltreatmentsthatmayleadtovoice improvements. Both vocal chord injections and voice therapy haveshownsomeofthemostpositiveresults withtheleastamountofpatientdiscomfort.
