Key points to note 1. Many trees are called "cedar," but there are only four true cedar species. 2. One is from the Himalayas, while the others are from the southern and eastern Mediterranean. 3. They belong to the Pine family, genus Cedrus, and have whorls of needles along the branches as well as fat, upright cones.
They were historically the ancients' preferred type of wood, and the Bible's Temple of Solomon and King David's palace both employed them. The other "cedars" are fragrant coniferous trees from northern North America and East Asia that are useful for construction and fencing because they are moth, termite, and rot-resistant. They are all members of the Cypress family and belong to the Juniperus, Thuja, Chamaecyparis, and Calocedrus genera. They primarily have woody, leathery, or berry-like cones and sprays of scaly leaves.
ATTRIBUTES OF CEDAR Cedars can grow to be well over 100' tall in their natural habitat, but in a garden setting, the maximum height is around 50'. Dwarf cedars grow much smaller, and miniature varieties can be tiny, suitable for rock gardens and even bonsai training. The foliage colors range from green to blue-green to powdery blue, and there are even yellow-gold varieties. True cedars prefer deep, rich soil, but will grow in nearly any type of soil as long as it is well drained.
CHOOSING THE CORRECT CEDAR The USDA hardiness zones 6 to 9, which cover a large portion of the United States, are ideal for cedar growth. They also enjoy full sun to partial shade. A full-sized Cedrus would look great as an accent on a big property. For small gardens, pots, rock gardens, or urban areas, dwarf or miniature cedars are ideal. For the greatest results, design your color scheme based on what will stand out against and complement the current plantings, as there are many different colored cedars to pick from.
