Epilogue Following Brexit, all EU citizens already living in the UK must be sceptical about their legal status. These European Union citizens can apply for 'settled status' under the Settlement Scheme to continue living in the UK after 30 June 2021. The British government reached an agreement with the EU on the terms of the UK's withdrawal from the EU, including arrangements related to the legal status of the EU citizens. It has already been settled in the 19th March draft of the treaty. It covers the EU citizens who already live in the UK or arrive here before 31 December 2020. After applying, if your application is successful, you will get either settled or pre-settled status. You may be able to stay in the UK without applying - for example, if you’re an Irish citizen or have indefinite leave to remain (ILR).
When To Apply The EU citizens can apply for the Settlement Scheme when it will open for everyone by 30 March 2019. As of now, it is in the testing phase for some eligible applicants. Don't forget the deadline for applying is 30 June 2021. Close family members joining an EU citizen here after 31 December 2020 will have three months from their arrival in which to make an application for status under the scheme.
Who Can Apply Being an EU citizen or a family member of an EU citizen, if you want to stay in the UK after 30 June 2021, you will have to apply. This includes if you’re married to a British citizen. You will have to apply even if you have a ‘UK permanent residence document’. You can still apply if you have indefinite leave to remain or enter and want to swap it for settled status.
Who Doesn't Have To Apply You do not need to apply if: you have indefinite leave to remain in the UK. you have indefinite leave to enter the UK. you’re an Irish citizen. In the case that you don't need to apply, your family members will need to apply from outside either the UK or Ireland.
How Much Is The Fee It will be free of cost for: those who have a valid ‘UK permanent residence document’. those who have indefinite leave to remain in or enter the UK and want to change this to settled status. those who are applying from April 2019 to move from pre-settled status to settled status. for children in local authority care. For others the fee will be as under: £32.50 for children under 16. £65 for those who are 16 or over.
How To Apply You can apply online by filling the application form using any device like an android or iPhone. In case you need any help, you can get it over the phone or in person. To scan your identity document, you will need an android phone or tablet. If you don't have one, you can send it by post.
Documents You Will Need Proof Of Identity - A valid passport or national identity card will be required. If you are from outside the EU, then you can use any of the following: valid passport, biometric residence card or biometric residence permit. Also, a recent digital photo of your face needs to be uploaded. Proof of your residence in the UK. To prove that you have lived in the UK for at least 6 months in any 12 month period over a total of 5 years, you can give your National Insurance number. Proof of your relationship to a family member from the EU living in the UK, if you’re from outside the EU (for example, a birth, marriage or civil partnership certificate). This could be submitted by scanning. You’ll also need to provide evidence of your family member’s identity and residence. At an application centre in the UK, you will have to give your fingerprints and a photo of your face.
