  1. Patient’s Death In Ambulance: When Is It EMT Negligence?

  2. When thinking about medical malpractice or deaths, most people think about things that happened in hospitals or other healthcare facilities.

  3. These errors usually include: • Wrong diagnosis • Medication mistakes • Lack of care • Surgical errors

  4. However, sometimes medical negligence could occur even before you reach the hospital. EMT (Emergency medical technicians) negligence occurs often, especially in the first moments following an accident. If the EMT’s and paramedics neglect to provide the victim with life-saving care, the person could end up losing a life as a result. Losing a loved one is never easy.

  5. Some Examples of EMT Negligence Being only humans, EMTs are also prone to making mistakes. However, these mistakes could cause the death of a person. Each year, there are many wrongful deaths caused by EMT’s negligence and lack of care. Here are some of the most common examples of EMT negligence:

  6. Ambulance accidents: Did you know that the ambulance has 13 times higher chances to crash than a regular vehicle? That is because they tend to drive 30 to 50 percent faster than all the other vehicles in order to save a critical patient’s life. However, it is the speed that kills and if the ambulance crashes or causes an accident, the patient’s life could be over, resulting in wrongful death. Medication Mistakes: Most EMTs will often administer medication to the patients while they are being transported to the hospital. However, an EMT always has to ask the patient and check if the patient has any pre-existing conditions that would preclude the use of the drug. Giving the patient the wrong medication or in combination with a pre-existing condition could result in a fatality.

  7. Wrong Diagnosis: The job of an EMT is to check for life-threatening conditions and help save a patient’s life until they arrive at a hospital. EMT should never diagnose a patient’s illness or conditions. Miscommunication with the Hospital: The EMT’s duty of care ends when he or she hands over the patient to the hospital personnel. However, the EMT must file the right report and tell the hospital personnel exactly what was administered to the patient before arriving at the hospital. Without that information, the patient could receive the wrong medication or no medication at all.
